Title: Seized engine??!!
Post by: redneck_vdub on April 01, 2010, 10:57:50 pm
Hey there all. I have a mk4 golf tdi. I was recently driving to school in toronto and I came over a hill and ahead of me was a car waiting to turn, so I applied my brakes, it felt like the ABS kicked in for a second (my ABS light came on when I started it that morning) and as I was slowing down the car kind of chugged to a stop and I then noticed my engine was off. I tried to start it again...nothing, it just went click, it was trying to turn over but something seized up. I had my dad try to start it while I watched the serpentine belt assly, did not move at all. The car has 347k on it, the timing belt is still on it, it has oil, the crank does not spin by hand. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Put it in gear and roll it and see if the engine turns or tries to turn.

Don't do anything until you can get the head off or pull all your injectors & see if it'll turn over.

If your engine doesn't want to turn over the LAST thing you should do is try to force it.

That said I once had a "seized" motor, turns out my alternator bearings welded themselves and was locking the entire motor!

Hopefully it's something simple like a seized alternator.  :-\

i certainly hope so, but not lookin that way, is a an anlternator that stops dead really gonna stall a TDI in 4th gear at 70km/h, thats decelerating?? i would have just thought iof its somtihng on the accesory drive that the belt would just break, like it did on my 91 juimmy when the water pump seized solid, but then again stranger things could happen lol

Got most of it apart today, lookin like a dropped valve in cylinder 4. Glow plug tip was damaged. Pullin the engine tomorrow most likely.

Yeah I gonna give everything a good lookover. Got the engine out today, need a new head, piston, conn rod, etc, etc. Atleast this piston will look good on my trophy shelf haha  :P

Update: Got the entire engine stripped, not a nut/bolt left on it. Got a head from the wreckers with around 100k on it for $75. Got 1 free piston from a local vw guru, and other goodies to come!  :)

If your engine has spat even a tiny fragment of valve out, and down the exhaust (highly likely) then the turbocharger turbine wheel tips will have suffered foreign object damage too. It is highly advisable to get the turbo checked over while you are rebuilding the engine.

That's the plan, I'm getting it rebuilt.
