tired of wiggling wires on my fried out fuse box. i want real fuses. luckily I held onto this. complete bumper to bumper setup for an 84 td gl. Looks like I hacked the taillight harness, but at least I still have the connector. Since I gotta pull the dash, I'm gonna put in a much nicer one.
bought it a couple of months ago with some minor electrical issues. but as you fixed one thing, you'd lose two more. tired of those old fuses anyhow.

not a big fan of the brown one, so this one's going in. gotta match the wheel, right? :)

now off to test and clean and ready i'm gonna try to find a spare harness to fix the rear one.

I just hate how engineers wire cars. Im going to go through my 86. Im re wiring it with relays for the single rounds, losing the a/c, adding an in tank fuel pump, hope to make the MFA work, wire in a real relay for the glow plugs...maybe even hook up the heated seats.
I rewired my 71 Beetle to a normal system. Ive also intigrated a JDM 96 WRX engine/harness into a NA 99 Impreza.

Why not use the current rear harness? ;)
Ugh rewiring a whole vw electrical system.. i love the wiring aspects of things.. but that to much for me still lmao.

i'm prolly gonna. I would just rather have it all together before I yank the other stuff out. been cleaning it all day. pics to come.

I plan on losing the 3rd brake light and the defroster, and adding an electric fuel pump and rear fogs. I'm also going to go up in size on all the wires.
-
Why lose the third brake light?

Why lose the third brake light?
Because euro spec is ballin
-
boy I gotta take some pics of my progress before this gets out of hand ;D.
-
Why lose the third brake light?
Because I think its ugly and gaudy. I also have an 85 rear window. Ill probably be scraping the heating element off of it as well.

all mk2's are ugly ;D. after lots of cleaning and checking with the voltmeter, along with doing my own pinout :P I got this. left only the wire sleeves and cleaned as much as I could of it. its pretty much spotless now. I few wires left to tag up, but time is on my side, and I get a little done every day. some pics.
Cleeeeaannnnnn

I need to rewire my engine bay. All the insulation is super brittle from the engine heat and fumes. I have a couple marrets on each wire from all the splicing :-[.

that kid is just lovin' the V-dub. Good for him, I hope this car gets passed on to him in about.. hmm 13 years? (assuming he's three ;))

well, its done for the very most part. i'll try to note the specifics later, but just a few pics for now. major differences were simply the brake switch, the wiper motor, and headlight connectors. most everything was the same thing, just in different places in the new fuse box. finally, real fuses. one question I had for the coolant level sensor folks out there. How do I trick the light in the dash. the td has the sensor, mine doesnt. been too lazy enjoying the fire hazardless car now. :P.

So how did you get the tape gunk off the wires?
-
hours of sitting on the floor and scrubbing with free box tee shirt rags, and lots of concentrated simple green. every minute of prep was well worth it. The only thing I need to figure out is why my four ways will work, but not my turns. the light comes on in the dash either way solid when turning. I found a wire with 8 or 9 volts going to it other than the 12v feed, without any turning. that must be the issue. other than that, she's great. everything just feels so much more solid; esp the wipers. :P I took the time to relay my headlights for daytime running lights while I was at it.
-
Oiy. Well, I guess I need something to do... :p
-
just thought i'd update this as I haven't in a bit. Turned out I had bad grounds, and once I redid them all nicely, all is well. The electrical got back burnered as well as the suspension stuff because of engine failure, but... :P. Been busy making stuff look nicer. tonite went to find out where my windshield washer motor wire was. found quickly by itself with green/red and a T connector. looks like n/a's had the reservoir on the ps and the td's on the ds. Gonna have to elongate the wire. It all works with wipers perfectly. And I also have my new bilstein sports in fresh housings with new drop springs and mounts. Just need to get the rears done, and I'll has the low.
