Title: Difference between IDI and TDI?
Post by: Harry on November 21, 2005, 11:39:12 pm
I'm a newbie, particularly to the 1.9l engines. Are both the 1.9l-AAZ and the 1.9l-AHU engines turbo engines? Looking in a couple of books the AAZ is rated at about 65 to 70 Hp and the 1.9l-AHU is rated at 90Hp. Particularly, I am wondering if the AAZ is non-turbo. I would like to get a bit more power in my 1.6l n/a '85 Golf, but wish to keep it simple.
Thanks,
Harry

AAZ is a 1.9L IDI engine with a turbo and is rated 75hp, the AHU is TDI with turbo and rated 90hp.

The big difference is the way the diesel is injected, the AAZ is mechanical indirect injection. The AHU is Direct injection controlled by a ECU (enginecomputer)

The simplest swap is the AAZ, it is a 90% direct bolt-on (search the forums, I swapped the engine a few months ago) :) and with some modding you can get good power out of it  8)

Thanks, Maarten, clears up my question. I am finding it difficult to find the AAZ here in the southwest u.s. Perhaps they were brought in only to Canada, or Mexico?

correct. that motor was never offered to the US. you would be better off looking in canadian classifieds. keep in mind, replacement parts down the road will also be harder to find locally for you.

Thumbs up for a good engine... Pulls like a scalded dog, all day long.
