I just got the score of the century.
its a 1986 two door golf diesel, imported from germany by a guy in the military.
it is really low mileage!
no rust, paint is in god shape(just needs to be buffed) and the interior is mint!
it has a blown motor, but is only $400!
(timing belt was done wrong)
so I plan on grabbing it, and swapping the motor I just built into it.
I am so stoked, it is the euro model with lots of bits that dont exist over here(including the plastic under motor tray)
if all goes well, I will have it in my possession on wednesday(need to borrow a truck and rent a tow dolly)
you may all be jealous now!
-Owen
-
NICE SCORE!
We expect about 2935 more pictures when you receive it :P
-
oh, of course, the only reason I didnt take more is because my cameras battery was dying.
I plan on keeping it super clean(like it is now)
but I cant promise that it wont end up with a supercharger...
-
I would rather a promise that it will end up with one ;)
How about a twin charged fire breathing monster????? just by chance you may be willing to build such a thing lol
-
oh, perhaps.
I am just stoked that it is in such good shape!
I plan on keeping it looking as good as it is now(or better, if that is possible)
under the hood, I will probably go crazy(without chopping the body up)
-Owen
-
Funny how the speedometer reads in MPH and not KMH. If it was Eurospec wouldn't it be in KM? Does it have a sticker on the radiator support with the engine specs on it? Nice find.
-
not necessarily, depends where in europe it was sold(I don't know exactly.) some places in europe used MPH until just recently.
I am sure it has a sticker on the core support, but I didn't get a good look at it.
I didn't have much time to look at it today, but all of that kind of stuff will be well documented when I pick the car up.
-Owen
-
Where'd you find that? There was one in valdez that fit that description a little while ago for $400, might be the same one......Good find :D
-
probably the same one.
the PO had it shipped into anchorage to have a shop look at it.
he thought he could just throw another timing belt at it, but the shop told him it was a complete loss motor wise.
it is, the IM shaft is seized(and the IM pulley is broken) I will have to dissect it to know for sure, but I think it has a cracked block.
if it had a good motor in it it could pull $5000 or so(really) maybe more if it was down south where people appreciate the uniqueness of the Euro spec car.
I am so high right now, I just cant wait to collect it!
-Owen
-
I'm so jealous it hurts :(!!!!! I was soooo tempted to go get it but I thought (never even called) being from valdez, that it would be a rust bucket........I was very wrong. Congrats, I'll try to get over it ::)
-
Whats the first Digit in the Vin?, Very Nice car man, Looks really sweet.
-
not sure what the first digit ofthe vin is, but I will let yo guys know when I collect the car.
-

when I heard $400 I was expecting a bucket too, and almost peed myself when I saw what it was and he assured me that $400 was indeed the price.
I have never gotten a deal like this in my whole life. it always seems that someone else got the good deal(especially when it comes to VW's) and for the first time in my life I am that "someone else"
I cant wait until tomorrow when I go and pick it up!
the motor swap might take a little while to do, as there is only six weeks before I leave for the summer, and I have lots of other things to do, but at least it will be waiting for me at home!
-Owen
-
I'm still thinking of how to steal it without getting caught............ :P
-
oh, I will have my vicious attack dog taking care of it while I am gone!
;D
-
Good score, good for you - I paid three hundred for this one a month or so ago, a 1996 golf 1.9 IDI with about 160-ish klm on it.
Not German, but hey - the price was right.
-
you guys need to come to the east coast for cars. I pick up VW's all the time from 100 to 500$ running lol. I brought home a 91 Jetta NA last winter for 100 bucks and the thing worked great.
-
there are plenty running for that price, but none in as good of shape as this one.
heck, I don't think I have ever seen a mk2 in as good shape ever before in person!
I am happy to pay $400 for it, even with a blown motor.
-
400 with a blown motor is not bad, I paid 750 for my 97MK3 with a Blown Motor lol
-
you would be amazed at all the hate I am getting from the local guys.
they seem to think that I am doing something wrong trading up from a hammered piece of junk to a super clean low mileage dream car.
they seem to think that I am committing blasphemy by parting/selling the nasty shell I am driving around in now.
as if I were crushing a 69 corvette or something.
-Owen
-
It almost brings tears to my eyeballs when these things get crushed :'(.
As long as that doggy is there I'm stayin' away!!! :P
-
It almost brings tears to my eyeballs when these things get crushed :'(.
I will agree with you there, but I have no plans of(and never said I did) crushing the GTI, just stopping its use as a daily driver.
what will happen to it is undecided at this point, I might try and build an ice racer out of it ;D
-
oh, and Beans (the vicious attack dog) will certainly wear your skin away licking it if you let him.
-
That makes my score of the year pail in comparison.
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=190380112767 (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=190380112767)
Ive never seen one go this cheap.
-
you still got a good deal on that.
I would love to get my hands on one, even if only for a weekend to tune the motor.
-Owen
-
I have and old Snap-On version of one of those.. "Lumy-Mag" I think they call it.. Came with my Oscilloscope.. I'd love to toy with it but I only have adapters for early GM v8 diesels.. ::) The local rep is about worthless for trying to find the VW adapters...
-
how does it measure injection timing, replace a glow plug with an adapter?
-
It appears that way.. It has a little optical doo dad that screws in a glow plug hole.. Then there is another adapter to mount a magnetic pickup in the hole on the bell housing for a tach and TDC signal..
-
well, I am off to pick up the car today(hopefully)
I am charging my cameras battery and turned the resolution all the way up(to 6MP :( )
lots of pics will be coming tonight!
-
Boo yah nice score.
-
well, the truck fell through today again, so it looks like sunday will be the ticket.
-
Better hurry I might go snag it first :P
-
no you wont, I have already squared away with the PO, all I need now is to actually collect it.
I repeat, this is Mine!
-Owen
-
you still got a good deal on that.
I would love to get my hands on one, even if only for a weekend to tune the motor.
-Owen
Honestly..I can see using it a few times then shelving it. I dont see why I couldnt ship it to ya for a weekend or so. As long as I got it back.
-
that would be pretty badass!
but it would be a while before I would need it, not till after the motor is in the new car and sorted out.
thanks though, you would certainly get it back, and probably with some beer money too!
-Owen

-Owen
Its ok..I kinda screwed you on one of your girdles.Said Id take one then never responded. Getting divorced kind of puts a damper on the projects.
-
ah, don't worry about it.
I totally understand how life gets in the way.
I have since sold all of the spare girdles, and have made all the money back, no hard feelings.
-Owen
-
ok, here we go.
I tired to get a tow dolly, or a trailer from U-haul, but they were being stupid and would not give us one.
the truck we borrowed had to be back to its owner by noon, so we decided just to tow it with a strap(I know, very bad idea)
so we went off on our hour long drive on the highway to Wasilla!
took some pics when I got there:

there are a few cosmetic issues that I did not see when it was covered in snow, as well as a few things that will need attending to(but nothing too bad)
here are the little problems:
so I started to label the harness and pull the motor apart in preparation for the motor swap.
I also removed the under motor tray(love this thing!)
this is cool too, the "dimmer" switch here actually controls the headlights from inside the car, the actuators behind the light can raise or lower the beam!
I pulled the head, and the darned thing looks good!
it has a few bent valves, but the head is in good shape(could easily be rebuilt) with no cracks between the valves!
the bottom end spins freely, and there is hardly any mark on the piston top from hitting the valves.
all the pistons come up to the same place in the block(just past the deck) so the rods are fine.
there is no ridge in the cylinder, and the honing marks are still evident.
the damage was done by whoever did the timing belt putting the tensioner on backwards:
which did not allow it to rotate, so the belt wore itself through sliding on the tensioner instead of rolling on it.
considering the condition of the head and block, I have decided to have the head rebuilt and get it running again instead of swapping the motor out of my car.
that way both of them will run and be mobile, and I can store the GTI at my parents place and drive the new Golf.
as for the actual year of the car, I am thinking it is a later model, as it has all the late model stuff under the hood, as well as big doors etc...
I could not find a sticker stating when it was built, tire pressure recommendations, GVWR, etc...
but I did get a pic of the vin to decipher.
oh, and as a bonus, anyone know what this is?
-Owen
-
also, the engine code seems to be "JP", which I am unfamiliar with...
-
just ordered a new head gasket, timing belt/tensioner, seals etc...
all I need to get now are new valves and lifters and the head can go to the rebuilders.
-
The 1 for the first digit shows it was built in Wolfsburg Germany. a 3 means some burrito plant in Mexico
-
1= Westmoreland (Pa. plant)
G= 1986 year of car
-
That thing you're asking about is an aftermarket alarm horn. Rip it outta there.
-
Oh ,funny about the VIN, it was made in the US

yea sorry, W means Wolfsburg Germany lol

yeah, the vin does not match the car.
the vin stamped in the raintray starts with "WVW"
-
whats the vin on your registration say?
-
dont know yet, I haven't received the title yet.
-
dont know yet, I haven't received the title yet.
That's a pain, people like to sell stuff and say they'll get you the title "later", and after buying you find out they really don't have a title :(.
I few months ago there was a set of those adjusting headlights on ebay, the whole setup minus grill was 400 bucks :o, 't would be neat.
I can hardly imagine anyone being so stupid as to put the tensioner on backwards!!!! It's so obvious!!!!
-
yeah, the tensioner on backwards is soooo crazy.
as for the title, I met the guy, chatted with him, I have his address and bank account number.
I am confident he has the title, he just didn't bring it with him as he was only bringing the car to anchorage to fix it, he had no plans to sell it.
and the adjusting lights are sooooo cool, one of them is broken(the bucket) but I think I can take apart another set and repair the adjusting ones.
-Owen
-
Because it was a service member maybe it had to be re-vinned for some reason.
On a side note..my 132 Kent Moore kit is brand new..but I had to drop another $150 for the 6mm clamp sensor. Why the kit came with 3 magnetic pick ups Ill never know. But I am going to put 1 or 2 on ebay..why not right?
-
well, according to the vin on the raintray it is a 91 from germany.
it looks like the dash and taillights were swapped when it was brought over.
-
the bumpers that your car has owen, are those euro specific? or just usa spec? seems like the usa spec bumpers stand off the body a little more.
-
To me looks like a nice euro-spec Golf D. I'd say it was made on 1988, early 1989.
The JP engine is the 54bhp@4580 non-turbo engine. No oil squirters. Solid as a rock, and gets pretty good mpg. Used by VW from 1980 until 1991.
-
according to the vin in the raintray it is a 91, the dash and tails were swapped for early US spec ones.
I just ordered new headlights to take apart and repair the broken ones in the car now, so I can retain the electric adjust feature.
I also found this for a song, how do you think it would look in the golf?
-
alright, parts are starting to come in!
new timing belt/tensioner, oil/fuel filters, complete gasket set, and head parts(thanks to subsonic) have just arrived.
the head will go to the rebuilders on monday, so hopefully I can go and install the head next weekend!
pics coming as things progress.
-
How have things progressed? W.e vin the title has I would register it under that one.. Who cares if the dash doesn't match? How easy is it to swap a dash on these... Right
Lookin good so far

I think I worded something wrong, I did buy it but it doesn't run yet.........
-
As long as that head is off, I personally would disassemble it, meticuluously clean it up, hand-lap the valves, and go with Viton stem seals....but, that is just me.....
