Title: Coilovers or lowering springs
Post by: catlin_cava on March 03, 2010, 09:50:33 am: I'm looking at lowering my golf and I don't know what to use or which is better, coilovers or lowering springs. what do you guys think?

Putting lower springs on stock shocks will overwhelm the shocks and make them wear out fast. Lower springs have higher spring rates so they don't bottom out on the bump stops all the time. That's what wears out the shocks. You will need higher dampening shocks to deal with the higher spring rates. Coilover shocks are already higher dampened so they last much longer. There's lots of affordable coilovers out there. The B&G coilovers have the advantage of having a comfortable ride and being low at the same time due to the two-way height adjustment. I'm sure you already know this but you need an alignment whenever you change heights so you can't just raise and lower coilovers on a whim.

Now, what brand/type is up to what you want. Budget minded? Just want looooowww? Performance handling? Cruiser ride and stylin'? There's a lot out there and the pricing starts pretty low and goes very high ($300 to $2000+).

Then there is always air...

WEITEC is good stuff. I love the ride and

However, I just bought some Rokkor coil-overs for my mk4.

I REALLY wanted to get a Weitec cup kit but it was about $600.00 and I was able to get the coil-overs shipped for just over $300.00.
Figure I can resell them if I don't like them and save up for the Weitec's..

They were graet when new but into my third year
the fronts no longer have any dampening and need
to be rebuilt.
I grease them up with marine grease for winter and wipe them
off clean for summer.
Presently running Neuspeed sofsports and for the application
I find them great on our potholed montreal roads.
Match up the sofsports with Koni orange's and you will have a bullet
proof tough as nails suspention with a conservative 1.5" drop
for year round use.
I'll get the Patecs rebuild and they will go
on the diesel MKII alpine white GTI I am building.
