Title: My odometer has breathed it's last.....
Post by: rabbitman on February 21, 2010, 12:59:31 am
Everybody knows about the little gear in the mk1 odo that splits and the slips, causing a lying odo and eventually a complete failure......

Does anyone know if a 87 cabriolet speedo will fit in place of the stock speedo? Will the rabbit speedometer cable hook up or will I need the mk2 style?

Here's the link: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=250581971243&viewitem=&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWAX%3AIT (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=250581971243&viewitem=&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWAX%3AIT)

Thanks  :)

It's been a long time ago since I tried this but, IIRC the speedo cable fits.. But the gauge itself isn't a direct bolt in to the cluster.. I imagine with some patience it could be fit in there, but I'm not patient....  I could be totally off on this too, but there was some reason why I didn't persue doing this...

A dab of glue and a tiny snap ring around the lip on the gear typically gets these things working again though..

I just repaired my speedo as well. Hasn't turned in 12 years.

One drill bit, and one drop of glue later. Voila.

Yeah I tried fixing it with a tightly fitting washer on each side and some glue.......it worked for 9.9 miles and died again.

I have too many accessories in the dash panel and it's a pain taking it off all the time so I'd rather just get a new/nother one.

Does anyone know where a pic of the back of a cabriolet speedo is? It's a square face like the rabbit one so I "assume" it'll bolt in (one way or the other). Maybe I'll just get it and see, it'll be nice having numbers past 85mph for those downhills.........

Well vw must've mk2'd the speedometers guts for the 87 cabriolet, I wrote the seller and he said it's a clip on cable.

So I think it'll fit in the rabbit cluster since it's square and I can get a junkyard cable and hopefully make it work.........

Any more thoughts? :D

You just want to put a cabby speedo in an mk1 rabbit/jetta cluster? I think it should work out alright, as long as its the same shape.. why not eH?

Yeah, they consider cabby's to all be mk1's... but is that for everything? were they still using mk1 susp? and everything else? or did the heavier cabby get the mk2 susp?

I think they should have just carried over to an mk2 model.. 86-w.e the were made to.

My guess is the speedo has mk1 looks and mk2 guts since the cable is the clip on type.

I'll know shortly I hope ;D

No you didn't. That sending unit was for a Rabbit sedan, not a Caddy. The Caddy has a nipple on the top to vent fumes.

Well I put the cabriolet speedo in, fit like an ill fitting glove ::)

The cable is a clip on type, I wrapped duct tape around the clip spot so it sorta worked to use the screw on cable, I'll get a new one when I get the chance.

None of the holes lined up so I had to improvise and somehow I got it to stay in the cluster snug enough.

The mk1 gauge face is square and the cabby gauge is slightly skinnier and the corners are clipped off about a half inch so I used black electrical tape to make corners, it's not too obvious.

Now the problem is the speedo reads fast and the odo also reads fast, haven't checked with a GPS yet but RPM/speed don't match anymore and the odo clicks over about 50 yards before the mile post sign.
