Title: turbo upgrades for 1.6td
Post by: Cynical 1 on February 14, 2010, 11:00:13 am
i've looked around this and other sites, but have had no real result...

what is a good all arund turbo upgrade for a 1.6td?

the engine is an ecodiesel from a '90 jetta. it will be rebuilt, and will have a real td pump from a 1.6td.

i have seen that the turbo on the eco is a K14 (?). it needs rebuilt, and that's why i'm thinking of an upgrade at this time...

i'm not looking to put down 200hp, but i want it to make about 100-120hp and be a little quicker...

just throw me some suggestions. thanks.

The vnt15 is common, and if you set it up correctly can work really well for your setup.  I personlly am going to build a vnt 17/22 hybrid turbo with the exhaust from an euro only pd150 garrett gt 1749vb and the intake/compressor from a gt22.  There are a lot of vnt 15's out there on craiglook and so on but I don't know about any other turbos as I am highly interested in the zero lag and instant power concept. ;)

No need for those. A K24 or T3 would be plenty big enough for that. I like my k24. Docile for driving around town, but put your foot into it and it'll boost to 20lbs in a hurry.

I just knew that someone would share their knowledge of conventional turboes, I hope all of this helps.

thanks.

but would the k24 or t3 mount to the factory exhaust manifold and clear the intake?

These are factory turbos. I'm almost certain that the k14 flange is different than both the t3 and k24. Easy enough to find a manifold though.

1,6/1,9td K14/K24/T2/T3 share same 4-bolt flanges. K03 is different, 3-bolt.

:) (thumbs up)

Wasn't quite sure which had the different flange.

any specific trims for the tubo? will a t3 fit with the intake manifold, or would a spacer need to be mounted to move it farther away?

btw - the turbo on my engine is a K14.

The K14 is a pretty solid turbo though for a 1.6... It's not ideal for making super high boost numbers but it'll handle something in the teens for a good long time with no issues.  If you've been running ECO then you'll probably get significant gains from chopping off your Cat and getting a real pump.

The T3/K24 can sustain higher pressures without grenading, but they spool up a lot slower, so it takes more to get the car moving.

I paid $300 for a new GT15 from Porthe after I got the used one from craigslist and it was locked up... I made my own flang and mounts:

It gives my 4,000 pound Caravan enough power to pull a 2,500 pound pop-up camper loaded with kayaks and such. I have the stock IP so far. Never any black smoke and plenty of power. I get above 40 mpg driving 70 - 75 mph every commute. Would love to see what a Giles would do for me ;-) When it gets warm again, I'll do some adjustments to the IP and turbo setup as I only get 10 psi boost.

I've never personally seen an eco diesel but the T3, K24 etc should bolt right up. I think I remember reading that you will need a different oil return line as well.

Something to consider- The K14 from the 1.9 is a bit bigger then the one on the 1.6, it may be worth it to upgrade if you can find one.
