Watching the opening ceremonies :D Good luck to all the athletes! Go USA, Go Canada!
So sad about the Georgian luger, that was brutal seeing those folks come in, I'm glad they decided to march.
-
I went over to watch them come in, it was pretty sad
-
I am watching it right now, and they are dragging everything out WAY to long! I'm bored, get on with it for crying out loud.
-
USA #1. ;D.

He died on a practice run :(. First time to the Olympics.. 21 years old.. died pursuing his passion.
Flew off the track and hit a steel beam at close to 90 miles an hour.... was dead instantly they say
-
Smashed the back of his head of one of them steel poles at 90 mph...
Olympic luge to go head after tragedy (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Idy2FMb1-F0#noexternalembed)

Poor kid was in over his head when he got to Vancouver... that's a dangerous track for people who know it well, god knows where he was training. He suddenly finds himself doing 90 MPH on an unfamiliar track, he panicked and lifted his head, then lost contol. Caromed off two banks, lifted off the sled and flew into a row of steel girders supporting the banked curve and roof. The video is all over the place. There was no netting or padding in that section, he didn't have a chance.
-
I heard them say today that the guy had ran that track like 20 times, I forgot the exact number, he just messed up and "happened" to go over the side......very sad :'(. His teammate dropped out of luge.
They showed the clip of the wreck on TV and it looked like the wind kinda picked him up and threw him over :o
-
It was his second practice run... The Canadian teams have been running that track for 2 years now so it's had a ton of runs on it, it's definitely a fast track - even after changing the starting point lugers were hitting the same speeds as he hit when he went off.
There actually has been a luge death in the Olympics before, back in 1964 which incidentally was the first year for luge as an Olympic sport. The '64 Olympics actually had two performance-related deaths, so we're thankfully not setting any records there (hopefully!!).
Definitely rough. Unfortunately doing just about anything at 143 km/h can easily be fatal, let alone having nothing but a skin tight suit and a helmet to protect you. His helmet actually shattered when it hit the pole - pretty hard to tell in the internet videos but when I was watching on my big TV you could see chunks go flying. There was no trace of movement afterwards - I doubt he felt a thing.
On another note, my city was thoroughly abused by some rampant delinquents today. They claimed to be "protesters" but showed up dressed all in black with black face masks, and started smashing in store windows and beating on police officers. Take off, eh!!

This site says it was his 6th run, http://www.nbcolympics.com/news-features/news/newsid=412058.html (http://www.nbcolympics.com/news-features/news/newsid=412058.html)
What was their point? Protesting the Olympics? I'd say it's a little late for that ::).
Man they had some perty bad wrecks in the moguls.....looks painful, it looks painful even when they don't wreck ::).
-
Silver for the US in Nordic Combined!! First time EVER in that discipline. :)
-
First Gold For Canada in Mens Mogal Free Style. Guy was intense!

Shame the cops can't beat em like they used to. The Olympics ARE supposed to be politic-free. Good Luck.
Congrats to the US teams and our northern friends on their victories as well.
Stay safe, stay well. Jimmy.

Astonishing! We have the craziest girl on a teatray! Happy!

I don't know abooot you guys, but, I started out really looking forward to seeing the Russian male figure skater go for the gold.....I even really cheered him on. I was thoroughly impressed with his dedication/determination to the sport. I didn't give two poops regarding nationality.
Now, I'd sort of like to put the "platinum" metal where he grows his bacteria.....or...let my clutch foot slip off when he crosses the street!!! I'd need body work. (Silent rant.) (sorry ::)).
-
Yeah, the guy's being a real tool, I think his coach is egging him on, though. Quad jump not withstanding, he was very obviously outclassed by Evan Lysacek; he just plodded around the ring in between jumps.
-
Joanne Rochette.....we love you and are so proud of you!
-
OK, fine...so having beers and bubbly and some smokes out on the ice wasn't the brightest thing to do.....but, let he who is without sin cast the first stone!!!!!!!
I sure hope this incident can be quietly put on the damn backburner real soon.

After all the fans had gone home to boot! They say it was because there youngest player (18) was seen chugging a beer. Who gives a rats ***? A similar situation.. a week ago, an 18 male athlete was spotted in the crowd after winning a medal chugging a beer with a fan! NOTHING WAS SAID ABOUT IT!

i went to Vancouver and not for the usual reason - a dime bag, it was to see the winter olympics

i hate people. It's CANADA. We love our beer. like come on..

Stadium was empty. They won a gold medal on the ice. They wanted to party where they won.
Big F**KING deal.. They earned it.
Even though she lives in America, Cheryl Bernard is one sweet piece. Though the Swiss honey had a tongue ring, Cheryl looked sweeter. :)
Nice to see the American bobsled team win for the first time in 62 years. Was a bit disgusted when the Swiss team member waved his hand in disgust when bested by another team (Canada?). Every other team applauded the team that bested them.
And your skater deserved one of the hockey teams beers for her work under the circumstances she was left with her mother passing away at the games.
JMO. Stay safe, stay well. Jimmy.

lmao! I WAS THERE! he walked down Granville after winning gold in skeleton. His story is he's just some random guy who like ... works in a factory or something blue collar like that and decided he was going to take up skeleton and turned out to be good at it, actually the best in the world.
he was walking down the street down town (the whole core of van was a party during the olympics) and someone came outside from a bar with a full pitcher of beer and gave it to him. The guy had security and stuff but oh man was it ever priceless to see.
so glad i was here for it.
