Mark EVERYTHING, keep a log with some short descriptions and sequence of what you're doing, read bently.

Get a good sized cardboard box and flatten it. Draw squares on it and label each square with the location of the nuts and bolts you take out. Put the nuts and bolts in said squares.

Sorry about that. 83 caddy, 1.5n/a 4 speed coming out. Putting in 1.6 n/a with a 5 speed. The 1.6 has been re built.

the hardest part is going to be the shifter linkage.

Good call, do you have all the 5 speed shifter pieces?

Do you have an engine hoist? I would drop the engine and lift the truck up over it.

Does the 5 speed have the driverside mount on it already? It is different then the 4 speed one.

Loosen off the axle nuts (30mm) before you jack the truck up. Do not roll the truck around without the outer axles installed or you will destroy your wheel bearings.

Yes I have the 5 speed links. Y would you lift the truck and not just lift the motor and trany? I beleve I have all the mount brackets.

the bentley says which pieces are different are different for the linkage;  iirc the selector bracket on the transmission itself, and one of the connecting arm thingeys are the only difference.

and as for lifting the truck.  I tried just for shiggles to put one in through the top recently(I always go from below.  you can pretty much have the motor completely put together and just bolt it into the car.  it won't work like that from the top.  weird angles to deal with versus straight up.

says who? how would that destroy anything? the axle is fastened to the hub, not the wheel bearings. the wheel bearings still have load on them anyway. how does the axle not being there have any affect on it? i just dont see how this can even be possible? cause ive rolled plenty of VWs around with no axles, and even for some longer distances, and the bearings faired just fine.

and superbro, if you try and take the engine out through the hood, you will know why we told you to go out through the bottom. just take our words on it here. or you can try doing it yourself. either way, the engine will be going back in through the bottom if you are smart.

and if you dont have the 5 speed specific mount, you are SOL. 4 speed ones are different enough its hard to modify them to even work.

and make sure the 5 speed going in has the same 90mm drive flanges. if it doesnt, you will need to swap flanges or build some axles. ive done both ways, and neither is hard to do. my rabbit has mk1 axles with mk2 100mm inner cv joints. my gti had the flanges swapped.

also, you need every thing basically besides the shift shaft from the shifter. there are more than one or 2 specific pieces. ive done a few 5 speed conversions, and never used the same combination of pieces twice. my rabbit was half 4 speed links and half 5 speed links, with a 5 speed shifter relay (the piece that bolts onto the splined shift shaft) and relay rod, going to a 4 speed relay ball, with a 4 speed rod from that. and the gear selector shaft was straight forward.

I was under the impression that any bearing that has a split inner race like our vw's and have a specific axle nut torque are the bearings that need preload. Solid inner race bearings like a GM product the bearing is preloaded when they are made so they would be different. Maybe after the bearing has been compressed and there is no engine in it you might have some luck moving it around, but I wouldn't think you would want to tow it for 1,000 miles or anything.

Yup.... from the MK2 Bentley, Chapter 11 page 14 under "Suspension and Steering":

"Caution:  Moving a car with the axles removed will quickly damage the wheel bearings.  If moving the car is necessary, always secure the bearing races by temporarily installing an old outer CV joint in the hub, or hold the bearing races in place with two large washers and a suitable bolt and nut"

As theman53 says, the front wheel bearings are a split design and rely on the axle to hold them together.  I keep an old set of outer CV joints on hand just for this purpose... much easier on the peace-of-mind. ;)

Cool guys. How would I lift the truck over the motor? I have all the cv suff worked out. I will hafto look and see if I have the right mounts. I also have two 5 speed links and all the 4. So would I just mix and match till it works?

By the way the names Aaron

most of the problem is getting the shifter to go over far enough to actually engage fifth gear. you need some 5 speed specific parts for sure, no other way around it. i would start with a whole 5 speed linkage setup first, and go from there.

you need the 5 speed gear selector shaft, 5 speed ball, and 5 speed linkage rods and that's it. ;)

Get a 5 speed rebuild kit, easy and all the stuff you will need if worn

selector plate from v.w. 55.00

Dont forget to spoil yourself with a new leather knob !

What engine are you installing ?

i use one of these cheapo harbor freight dollies to roll it out.  this rabbit needed only to go a little higher up to roll the whole thing out.  And I did this by myself for the most part in the span of a few hours.  remove wheels and axles.  lower until motor sits on dolly.  unhook electrical, and exhaust, motor mounts.  lift (you'll want at least one biggy jack for this part to get it high enough.)  motor rolled right out with both manifolds still attached.
