Title: Garett T3 Waste Gate Access?
Post by: Smokey Eddy on January 21, 2010, 07:40:39 pm
How do i access my waste gate to see if it's jammed open on a T3?
The 4 bolts that hold on a backing plate on look like they have become one with the studs they are on :P

gas axe if you have it. Failing that, get a wire cup and a drill, and clean the rust off. Then blitz it with PB Blaster or Gas-X. You may need to heat the bolts a touch with a MAPP gas torch to break them free.

i second the heat and PB method. ive gotten some pretty messed up turbos apart with just heat alone... but i destroyed the shaft of one of them, it came out blue...

either way tho, if you have to, grind the heads of the bolts off then extract the bolts.

if they are nuts, heat them up real good and attack them with a nut splitter.

by nut splitter you mean a hack saw?
I don't own a shop... I have no idea what these tools even are...
"PB Blaster or Gas-X"
"gas axe"
I dont even know what those are. let alone have them.

All i have are some woodshop stuff, propane torch... hack saw... dremel...

nut splitter:
pretty cheap at Crapa or Schmucks.

gas axe refers to a cutting torch(also called a blue-tip wrench, hot wrench etc...)

pb blaster is a REALLY GOOD penetrating lubricant and corrosion loosener, which works better with heat

the propane torch you have will work, but will take much longer to heat the part, making the whole thing really hot by the time you get the nut glowing.

i just wanna jam that waste gate shut.

if you jam the wastegate shut, you dont wanna get too crazy on the fueling. cause eventually, your turbo will explode if its got nowhere to let the excess exhaust to go. if you leave the waste gate disconnected, atleast then if your drive pressure gets too high, the WG can open by its self and let the excess pressure bypass the turbo still.

Crappy Tire has it, Gas-X is Napa. In a pinch kerosene will work too.

Eddy,

You can get a bottle of MAPP gas at CT and if you want to spend the dough a tiny Oxy Acetylene torch which will do the trick. Its 72 bucks or so IIRC, but it eats gas pretty fast. BTW the MAPP gas can be used with a regular acetylene head.

i realized that upping the boost on my t3 past its natural opening point (22psi) would just be harmful if i am to go through with my compound idea...
