hi, let me introduce myself...I'm 17, bought an 89 non-turbo diesel golf for my first car, plan on autocrossing this year (i raced my friends dads mustang last year), my car is stock, but hopefully not for long, and as cheap as possible. I am also a part of the vwvortex forum, and they know nothing about diesel improvements....they said if i adjusted a screw on the injector pump (the one that limits max. throttle) id get 10-12HP...well thats a lie, i get nothing but more but black smoke. i was wondering if you guys could help me out...i cant afford to turbo or put on propane/nitrous, so what else besides a K&N can i do to get a little more power outta my car?

thanks, Jeff :)

on vortex they told me 2"-2 1/4" would be too big and id loose too much low end torque because of lost back pressure....im so confused :? :P
-
:o I am SOO happy i found you guys!! :D :D

:o I am SOO happy i found you guys!! :D :D
LOTS of excellent information here.

would somone like carquest or NAPA sell a 2" exhaust set-up for a Mk2 golf? or am i gunna have to peice it together myself
and how do i adjust the IP timing?
thanks, Jeff
-
Would a K&N would do any good? :?:
It doesn't on my TDI, because the turbo sucks whatever air it needs, but on a D, would you gain a little something?
I know nothing about IDI engines, so this is only a guess from me guys.

Setting timing accurately requires the use of a dial indicator screwed into the injection pump. The procedure is described fully in the Bentley manual (you DO have a Bentley, right? It's required to be a mamber of this forum!!!).
wellll no....u see, their $90, and i have $0 cause insurance in canada sucks ass, and im paying $2400 a year so all my money goes to that [and fuel] (the odd time ive got some extra money)
so could someone please scan that page and post it up?
(hows the haynes manual?)
thanks again, Jeff
-
doesnt anyone have a bentley that they could help me out with?? :(

you're 17 and you're only paying $2400? i wouldn't complain... you're probably under your parents plan eh? i pay significantly more than you, '82 rabbit, and i'm 22. imagine what they want for the corrado.
a bentley is the first thing you need. you can find one used, and even new i doubt a diesel bentley is going to be $90. i found the corrado one on ebay new for $75US and the corrado ones are much more expensive than the diesel bentleys.
you're not going to get very far with mods if you don't have money for even a manual... not trying to be a jackass, just the way it is. you're interested in 2"-2.5" exhaust... the downpipe alone (unless you can make it yourself) is going to run you around $150-250 minimum. then you have to buy a muffler, resonator, and get the rest of the piping bent up. you should sit down and list off the modifications you'd like to make, put them in a logical order (i'm sure the guys here and old forum posts can help you with that), and then budget them out... save your nickels until you can afford what you want to do. i work fulltime and i still don't have as much cash to throw at modifications as i'd like. i'd like to get out to an auto-x or two this summer as well, but i need to be realistic.
is the golf your daily driver? i'd put my cash into maintenance and making sure everything is top notch in that respect. a stock NA diesel will be slow on the course, but if its your daily driver..... you don't want to have something break at the track and leave you without a vehicle.

well as you know I to live in Bowmanville and and I have a 91 jetta 1.6TD ,If you need any assistance or help I'm here ,I have the tools including the dial indicator. where abouts are you located?Im on Maple Grove RD.
While on the insurance topic I'm 21 and paying 130$/month whatever that is a year ,my monthly payment two months ago was like 198$/month ,It went down good
-
I agree with BlacktieTD, do the general maintenance for now.
If money is tight now here's what you should do:
1. Change all fluids for the best (or OEM) you can find. Don't be cheap on that cause you might regret it.
Things like tranny oil too (it's dead simple).
2. Change all filters.
3. Make sure nothing else is loose or will eventually need replacing (CV boots, tie-rods, wheel bearings, front and rear suspension bushings).
4. Put good fuel in it with some sort of additive and diesel on!
2400$ Wow, that's expensive!!!
I have a B4V and I'm paying 1600$ a year!
I have a turbo, so it's considered a "sports car" even though it's a station wagon....

rrrrrrrrr!
regarding the cost of the downpipe... i just called up alex at brullen in markham to get an idea of what it would cost to have a downpipe fabbed up. 2.5" stainless, all bends mandrel, without cat, is going to run 2 or 3 hours of labour and a total cost of $300-400 for just the downpipe, not including the rest of the exhaust system, and not including the ceramic coating i want to have done as well. pricey! :?
-

no...im under my own plan....my parents wouldnt let me under theirs

thanks man :D , maybe sometime i can come over and get some help and borrow your dial indicator....im over in aspen springs, just about 5 mins from you (im on westside dr.) i would like to advance the timing on my pump
thanks, Jeff

Do these guys do a lot of VW's?

not sure, but i've heard about their work quite a bit over in the vortex and when i bought my G60 it had a brullen muffler on it. they seem nice enough on the phone, honest, straight-forward.
no...im under my own plan....my parents wouldnt let me under theirs
$2400 seems like a good deal then... i know of 17 year olds with clean records that can't even get coverage other than facility. $200 a month seems cheap for your age. when i was 17 (5 years ago before all this insurance industry BS) i paid $170/month with full coverage. now i can't even justify paying for collision coverage at the rates they charge. i wish i could go back to the good ol' days.
-
I'm still at 198$/year on the Golf.
I've had it since 98 and I haven't changed policies.
The Cabriolet is 700$/year, almost no coverage.
I'm quite happy.
Just for the fun of it. It's 1300$/year first driver on a BMW 323is 2000 and it's 1980$/year on a Jetta TDI 2000.
Those were estimates I got last year.
***ed up insurances companies.

Jeff if you want to come over somenight this week after 5:30 I'm at 2591 Maple grove Rd
-
alright, thanks andy :) ...but wed. night i cant, im going to my buddies body shop cause i just got backed into tonight....some guy was backing his pick-up outta the drive way, and hit my car parked on the side of the street....he said he doesnt want to go through insurance (and neither do i) but he'll pay how ever much it costs...i already got most the dent out (took out the panel and used my foot) but theres still 2 small dents, and the paints cracked  ....how long of a job is it to adjust the timing?
thanks, Jeff
-
I'm 21 years old and I pay 430$/year of insurance on my 90 Jetta TurboDiesel. Yes is only one-side and i have no fire, and all the thing coverage. (But my 1500$ 16" mags are insured.) And i got a responsible accident and a speed ticket who increase the insurance price. I'm insured at ING.
I wouldn't ever pay 2400$ of insurance on a 89 car
-
you're in quebec. different ball of wax. insurance in ontario is so bad i'm thinking of subletting an apartment in a different province so that i can have a non-ontario address.
you think $2400 on an '89 is bad, how about $3600+ for an '82?
-
good heavens - that is so up thier - costs that is!
And Andy2 - I probably ripped by your place last week or before - I was on kind of a road trip. - 3500 km - 30 hours to do it.
Picture the blues brother and his sweetie.
[I suppose some of you have no idea what I am talking about]

hey Andy, i was wondering if i could drop by tongiht (tues.) probably around 5:30-6. how long do you tihnk it would take?
thanks again, Jeff :)
-
sure come over whenever
-
oops I just realized that my dial indicator is at work , I'll have it any other time though.
-
thats ok...hmmm i can come over friday maybe...ill let u know later
thanks, Jeff
oh ya....how long will this take? :P like 20 mins or couple hours...??
-
To only check to pump timming it takes a couple of minuites ,adjusting takes aprox 15 mins , but I would suggest that the crank to cam timming should be checked also ,The only thing is that you will need a new valve cover gasket for this procedure. That takes 10 minutes to check and adjust ,If you get the new gasket make sure you get the new style (one piece) type. I dont know if anywhere around here has the new style gasket other than the dealership , Its not big$ anyway.
-
ok, ill go to car quest today (wallace auto) its in town on king near cowans....i'll see what they've got and hopefully its not too much money cause im in the hole right now as it is (i think i may be selling my dirtbike to get a few extra bucks :( )
Jeff
-
you dont necessarily HAVE TO replace the valve cover gasket... if you're really tight on funds, just reuse the one that is on there. if it leaks, then replace it. :)
-
ya, i guess we could try that, but if it ripped or sometihing, i'd be screwed....but we'll try that first...maybe save me a couple bucks
Andy now that i think of it friday isnt good....i have to take my car to my buddy's body shop cause i have to get some body work done (i got backed into monday)
maybe next week,
thanks,
Jeff
-
gasket cant be more than $10-15 anyway. good luck :)
-
hey andy,
can i come by mon. night? (if not, tues?)
thanks, Jeff (oh ya, i think ill try to do it with out buying a new gasket....do u think thats wise? let me know)
-
if it leaks, its about 5 minutes to take the 8 valve cover bolts off, remove the old gasket, put in the new one, and bolt it down. i wouldn't worry about it much.
-
Andy....i wont be able to make it over there monday but i can hopefully come tuesday (work started later than expected tonight and i wont get off till about 8 or 9)
thanks, Jeff
-
OK.
-
:D thanks again andy!....i went for a drive through oshawa after i left your place, and i had a guy on a bike shake his head at me as he passed and a guy (just being an ass) yelling out the window saying "your car stinks" and "fix your car" and stuff :D :D(so funny :P ) ...my car is awsome now  (but i still want a turbo  )
thanks again, Jeff
-
