Title: Twin scroll turbo idea?
Post by: Powered by Spearco on January 13, 2010, 09:56:23 am
Found this part for running a twin scroll turbo. Would this and a well built ex. man. to a bigger holset or schwitzer turbo make any boost sooner?

Interesting.

You could test the theory behind it by installing a thin spacer that reduces the exit on the turbo and see if it spools up any faster.

Yeah, they work quite well if done right. Pretty usual trick on Finnish TDI's and some IDIs too.
As for me, I'm trying to find the best flowing turbo possible, without needing such a valve just yet. Optimizing, optimizing...

heres a bunch of ls1 guys arguing about it, looks the guys that used it love it.  i still wonder if it would make a holset usable at all.

but if you have a pulsed manifold, that thing screws you over, because in theory, 1&4 go to one side, and 2&3 go to the other side of the flange. so that would close down exhaust from one set of cylinders if used with a pulsed manifold. and besides, that thing is way too expensive. its a valve for christs sake, not rocket science. not worth 500 bucks IMHO.

its made for use on a single scroll manifold with a dual scroll turbo.  i agree the price is crazy,  they probably make those for less than 50 dollars including labor.  a guy on the link i posted made one by drilling a hole through the dual scroll manifold and putting an old exhaust valve through it then welding his own butter fly to it.

Um, $500 is way to much  :o  for a valve like you said. Sure are nice looking  :-*. Anyone know of any other kinds?

I have a turbo off of an early 80's Volvo 6 cyl (VW LT) TD (non-intercooled) Garrett TB03 I think.
It is a twin-scroll casting (marked H4).  Early, crude, but a true twin scroll and it would fit, sort of.  Would have to radically re- map it and chop the ends off the manifold to make it a 4.  The way it is set up is 1-2-3 go to one side and 4-5-6 go to the other.  It's in storage or I'd take pictures (If I had a working camera...)

I have my eye on a Holset H1C with a split housing, but I think I will rely on the supercharger to help spool it, I am not a big fan of things pre-turbo that might break and send shards into the turbine.

I think with a HX or similar you might run it to surge probs down low. It would take some trial and error. But yes it cost way to much. Sad thing is people will and have paid that much.

alot of the holset have built in surge protection.  when dave made his 190whp jetta he had to drill the surge holes in his t04e housing due to this problem.  twinscroll valve is probably a good way to throw a rod

Here are some pics of the 6 cyl volvo (vw), I'll take pics of the divided inlet when I get it apart.
