Ok...maybe its not killing my car, but it dosent like it!
Btw I live in florida so I'm not use to 15 degrees in the morning.
When I crank up my car from a cold start it leaks out oil right above the oil filter, but once it warms up it stops leaking. It started doing this when the weather turned cold....or maybe its just a coincidence.
I'm running rotella synthetic 5w40 with a wix filter (I have a mann filter on the way)
91 ecodiesel.

Oil pressure is very high when cold. Is it leaking from the vent hose to the vacuum pump(or blockoff plate if you don't have that).
Or more likely the pedestal the oil filter mounts on. It's an easy gasket to replace, or snug up the bolts, if so.
If that's the only leak you have you are blessed, heh..

Its leaking from the pedestal. I had every seal in that motor replaced a year ago with the timing belt, water pump, head gasket, rear main (when I did the clutch) and its still a wet motor lol. But its leaking a good bit from the oil filter pedestal, all the other leaks...well I wouldnt call them leaks more like motor sweat.
Thanks for the reply.

Aside from switching the gasket or tightening the bolts a bit more, you could try switching to 15w40 Rotella. That's what I run and it'll start at -45C when it's plugged in, -25C when not. You really don't need the Rotella 5w40 although it is a great oil.
-
15W40 would cause even higher cold oil pressures then 5w40 wouldn't it?
-
Oh yeah, I didn't read the first post carefully enough. Stops leaking once it warms up. Well, at least you know your engine is actually in good shape as far as the bearings and lifters are concerned.

Yeah I did all the seals and gaskets on mine when it was out this last time too, 3/4 of em weep. Just a VW thing I guess, never had another motor leak like this. Damn mercedes is 36 years old and has only one or two small traces. Maybe it'll keep something from rusting.

yeah, my dad has a 93 5 cyl bens (odometer stoped at 271k 3 years ago) no leaks. my grandpa has a 85 5cyl 193k miles and no leaks. and mine only has 156k and its allways wet, go figure ::)
I guess I'll check those bolts and hunt me a gasket.
Thanks for your help guys.

btw, would the oil filter pedestal= the oil filter stand? I think I found the gasket.

I can start up at 0F with delo 10w-30 and it doesn't puke oil out.....at least right there ::)
Is the oil filter tight?
