Title: computers turbos and cats

I have owned and rebuilt several 1.6 diesels,1984's and 1992's to be specific. I am planning to move into newer diesel VW's in the near future and but would like to avoid variable displacement turbos, catalytic converters and computer controlled fuel injection pumps. Do they use O2 sensors throttle position sensors or other controls?  I would like any info on what year these pieces came into production or where I can find out. Just want to stay away from expensive, complicated parts.

First and still most important of the electronic sensors would be the MAF sensor. Stands for mass air flow. It's on the intake between the filter and the turbo. If you want to avoid the electronics you could learn how to build mechanical-only VW pumps. Once you get to the PD engines, there is no way to avoid the ecu.

what is a 'pd' engine? and when did they come into production? I have 3; 1.6 natural diesels 1984 vintage and 5 speed trannys with various parts scavenged that are eventually going to a new home or scrap any idea who might be interested?

I had the same quandry when I was looking for a more modern engine for my Caddy. I had an early TDI, but the computers scared me. I eventually went with the last IDI engine that VW built, an AAZ. This 1.9 diesel was available till about 1997 here in Canada. I bored it out, balanced it, ported a new head and installed a Giles pump to fuel the Garrett T3 turbo. In mild trim, I have 147 horsepower at the wheels and 220 ft lbs. of torque. Believe me, it's more than enough in a Rabbit, and very simple to boot. The torque is simply amazing.. ;D
