96 Golf TD 1.9
Can I use 10w30 oil now that the weather has turned frozen up here in Ontario or stick with the 15w40 which I have been using all summer?
Will it hurt the car to use 10w30?
I have a couple jugs in my garage that I can use for the oil change.

Go with rotella 5w40 (or 0w40 if you can find it). I run it every winter in my diesels and it helps significantly with engine start up.

Beat me to it Tyler

Just make sure it's diesel-rated... needs to have a "CF" or better. If all you can find are "S" ratings on the label keep looking!
The Shell Rotella 5W40 full synthetic in the dark blue bottle mentioned above is perfect.
This year I'm trying out Mobil 1 0W40 diesel-rated in my IDI... it's amazingly runny in Edmonton winters yet seems to hold oil pressure well when hot. Twice as expensive as the Rotella, however.

dino oil in both cases..5/20 in winter and in the summer diesel type 10/30

Where do I find the Shell Rotella 5W40 full synthetic?
Never even heard of it....is it ok for the TD 1.9 diesels?
-
Canadian Tire.... CJ-4 rated so fine for any VW diesel made before 2005... ie before PD.
-
Thanks.....$30.00 a jug does seem a bit pricey!
I guess it synthetic though.....
-
The rotella is the only thing I buy from walmart, it's around $17 a jug iirc. Do they have walmart north o' the border?
-
Yes.... Walmart made it's way here....Sometimes it's hard to get into the store though, what with the Polar Bears in the parking lot!
-
Just read the labels carefully... lots of different versions of Rotella out there... you want the dark blue bottle wiht the CJ-4 diesel designation.
-
I'm really happy with the rotella 0-40, I run it in a couple of vehicles all winter and the jetta only coughs on the really cold mornings...
$$$, yes, but my oil change interval gets stretched out a bit too....after winter's over, I just change the filter and run the oil until summers around the corner...

How about the Rotella 15w40 in the White jug? Is that ok to use?
Or, only the Blue jug synthetic?
-
It is absolutely fine, but not recomended in cold climates. 15w-40 is a great diesel oil, but since it is thick it takes more to turn the cold engine over. My old flat red rabbit wouldn't start with 15w-40 in it under 27 degrees F.
-
Yeah, just try pouring the 15-40 outa the bottle at -10 C and you can imagine how hard that little engine has to work....and exactly how much oil is getting through to the bearings....

Some of the white jug stuff I've seen has a diesel rating, some doesn't. The label tells all!!
-
Yes what vince said. I haven't seen a RotellaT bottle down in my neck of the woods that wasn't diesel rated. It is something I always check though, because oil mfg places always seem to be changing things.

we get a few flavours of rotella up here, one is rated for heavy equipment and carries a different rating. I run 0W40 in the blue jug, I have quite a few -40 days where I am.
