Thought it might be fun to share a couple motors I found for a song and a dance a few weeks ago. They are both 1.9 motors, one is an AAZ with turbo, and the other appears to be a Mexican built 1.9NA motor. The cool thing is they both came mounted on two skid type frames, including PTO manual clutch assemblies made by PEC Manufacturing in Marble Falls, TX. The AAZ motor had the complete PTO unit, but the NA Mexican motor is missing half of the PTO assembly. I was told they were used to run wood chippers.
Niether one has run in years, and they both had broken timing belts....imagine that. Right now I am rebuilding the AAZ motor, which I am planning to install into my Westfalia to buy some time so I can get all the stuff I need for a full TDI AHU conversion. The crank has stripped threads for the timing belt sprocket and the head has some bent valves, so I have some work ahead. This motor has what appears to be 1.6TD injectors and injection pump. For now I will probably leave the 1.6 injectors, but will try to find a true AAZ pump.
I know the Mexican NA motor will need a head. During timing belt catastrophe it looks like one lifter grenaded, so that head is trash. I havent got into the bottom end though. My friend bought a early '90s Jetta that incidentally had one of these Mexican industrial motors in it....his had shorter pistons and beefed up con-rods. We'll see if mine has the same. I drove his car and it had lots of low end torque.
So I dont know if I'll do anything with the PTO assemblies....at least not right now. Using one to drive a generator would seem like a good idea.
I'm trying to find parts to complete the second unit.
Here's a couple photos.

Nice find.
Do you have any more info on the motor mounts that they used?
Care to share the pump number?
-
They are both mounted at 4 points. One on each side of the machined aluminum "bellhousing". Then on the front side of the motor, just below the oil cooler there is a special mount that bolts to the block, and attaches to the skid via a machined aluminum spacer. You can see this pretty well on picture No.1.
On the backside of the motor, there is another mount that bolts to the block, then curves up underneath the starter and attaches to the skid via another machined aluminum spacer. I'll take some more better pics of the mounts.
The AAZ motor has cast aluminum mounts, and the Mexican motor has more like 1/4" steel "bent" mounts. All appear factory purpose made, and not homebuilt.
Unfortunately the rear mount on the AAZ motor is broken, so I will probably fabricate a replacement to match the bent steel one on the Mexican motor. There is no runner or urethane isolation mounts on these motors.
As far as the pumps go....Its been a long time since I remember looking at what all the different numbers mean on the ID plates....but, here's the VW part no. for the AAZ pump. 068 130 109 J That is the one that looks just like a 1.6TD pump. Interesting thing about that pump....I have a 1.6TD in my Caddy, I took the boost pin out to compare it to the pump off this motor, and this pump has a larger diameter pin. It doesnt even fit into my 1.6TD. The cone taper is very similar, but the overall pin diameter different. So who knows what this thing is. Maybe its a specific industrial turbo pump made to run at lower RPMs.
I'll get the number off the NA pump later....its in my other garage.
You can see in the second pic that the clutch arm has been cut off with a cutting torch. It should be like 18 inches long. it can be mounted on either side of the PTO.
I called the company to find out some more info on them. They couldn't tell me much about the motor, pump or whatever, just that Lister-Petter is now VW's industrial supplier apparently. As far as the actual PTO assembly, they still make them new....like $1200. But I dont think that includes the alloy bellhousing.
Here's the link to this particular PTO.

In pic No.3 you can see also a machined alloy hub of some sort attached to the pulley end of the crankshaft. I have no idea what they used this for.
In the bellhousing there is a sensor which I can only assume is there to signal a tachometer of some sort.
-
That bell housing looks a lot like one I have.
-
Hub on the pulley end is most likely for a cooling fan. I'm pretty sure these industrial motors usually use an engine driven fan. Looks like a Fox exhaust manifold on the NA motor.
-
Very interesting...
The bosch number would be 0 460 4x4 xxx It should be the first number stamped on the pump
-
The pump on the AAZ motor is 460 494 149
Here's the pump

And here's the block as I have it now. Gonna order parts soon so I can reassemble.

The pump on the Mexican motor is 460 484 140.
That is a non-LDA pump.
-
the n/a has an 8mm pump head for sure.
the TD has a 9mm pump head. kinda odd, i thought all these motors had 9mm pumps and only ecos had 8's?
-
1.9 NAs came with 8mm plungers. They may have also came with 9mm, I'm not sure.

I love seeing stuff like this.
So the rods/pistons are different in the industrial AAZ's?
Brendan
-
Brendan,
Well the AAZ motor, the turbo one, seems to have standard AAZ rods and pistons, which I expected. But I haven't got into the bottom end of the NA Mexican motor yet. However, a friend has one just like it in his A2 Jetta, and his rods and pistons are quite different. The rods have an extra stiffening "rib" running down the length, and the pistons are shorter. The rods are longer as well. This was a really torqey motor he had, but his had a turbo on it with a NA pump. So his was a bit of an oddball. In a week or so I'll tear the Mexican motor down to see whats in it.

What was the stroke and bore on your friends?
-
I got my bell housing from the machine shop today.
The part number is 125-955-104
looks a lot like your pics ... but the output side is closed up more, has 4 threaded holes in it.
I'll get some pics
