Title: O2O starter research
Post by: zagarus on November 24, 2009, 11:32:29 pm
So i've been trying to find a certain starter thread on vortex that i know would solve this issue for me, but i cannot find it.  Problem is this:

I have a 1.9TD that I am building and mating to an O2O tranny (for the time being).   As I didn't know I kept my stock diesel flywheel and PP I ended up using the flywheel from my coupes 1.8l gasser engine.   OF course this is a different size so to my understanding a diesel starter will not fit.  So my question is what starter can I use for a 1.8l gasser flywheel that will be strong enough to turn over the diesel.

I really wish i could find the thread on vortex as it had starter part numbers listed and different power ratings.

Hope someone can help me out here.

A diesel starter will work with a gas flywheel

i have a 8v clutch and 16v pressure plate on my diesel with a gas flywheel. they are much lighter than stock diesel flywheels. and the 16v plate really grabs better than the stock piece. btw, these parts were all on a 92 gas jetta. just be sure to have a diesel starter on a diesel engine, they are something like 2.1 horsepower, while gas starters are like .6 hp.

to my understanding i thought the gear on a diesel starter was different then a gas starter. Well thats good news because i still have my old diesel starter :D  thanks for the help guys, might fire this thing up sooner now

Will a new 1.9 gear reducer starter from an automatic car work on 020 as well?  I thought i read that somewhere, I just forget where if the 1.6 starter doesn't do it.

Even the 1.6 starters have gear reducers in them. There are the old mk1 starters and the really early mk2 ones that have about a 4" diameter. Those ones are direct drive. When the diameter went to about 2.5" that is when they started using gear reduction.

Early automatic starters won't work in place of a manual tranny one because they spin backwards.

A starter from an automatic MK4 TDI will work.
