Title: compatable engines
Post by: cliffw on November 17, 2009, 07:43:29 am
Hi folks  I'm new to forum   Son has 91 golf diesel 1.6  Broke timing belt looks like bent valve & maybe ruined piston.  Has chance to pick up 1.9 L diesel.  Can this be directly swapped in.  Thanks

Thanks.  Not sure of year of 1.9:  think it's early 90"s  Can you elaborate on differences?  Thanks

Early version of the 1.9 (AAZ) had no computer and so almost a drop-in swap to your existing engine.

Later version (1Z, AHU, ALH)  has computer, no throttle cable, etc, so a much more complicated swap.. lots of wiring, new pedal cluster, and so on.

To tell the difference look at the injection pump to see if it has a throttle cable or not.
