Ok, here's my dilemma: The vehicle is an 84 Grumman Kubvan, with a 1.6na. I was planning on turboing it, and collected all the parts to do so, as well as an egt gauge. Recently I found a 1.6 TD motor for sale nearby, and being the VW diesel sucker that I am, I bought it. It is now sitting in my shop. Mileage and con. are unknown, other than that I saw it run and it didn't seem to have excessive blowby. The na motor in the van has good comp. and oil pressure, and starts easily in any weather. I also recently replaced the HG, timing belt, and glow plugs. I had no probs with it driving around last summer. I thought it would be nice to have a "real" TD, w/ oil squirters, especially since I'm pushing a heavier vehicle, but I know the motor in the van is in good shape, and I don't really feel like an engine swap now that the weather is wet and cold. I don't plan on getting huge power out of this motor, but stock TD power would be great. So, what would you do?

Make the TD the winter rebuild project. Do it slow, and do it right, and thow it in when spring rolls around.
Love the Kubvan, there were a few of them for sale around here over the summer... Definitely something you don't see every day. Post some pics when you get a chance. I'm dying to see one done up with decent rims and paint (or polished). Like a more modern Fridolin.

that thing is absolutely hideous...

That's so cool!! Aluminum body? No rust haha. :D

that thing is absolutely hideous...
But it's more comfortable to sleep in than a Rabbit, and besides, what other vehicle can you drive down the highway with the doors open?
-
No offence ...
that thing is absolutely hideous...
but a big +1 ;D
I'd probably do all the 'usual' power mods for the 1.6TD.

I would love a kubvan, they are the ultimate in coolness.
that and being made mostly out of aluminum, they are lighter than a MK1 rabbit(helped by the fact that, being a delivery van, they don't have many of the street trim items that rabbits do)
-
I would love to make a camper out of a kubvan. A Westphalia kubvan would be a real unique item.

Put the turbo stuff on the old NA engine.
It can handle it if you don't beat on it,..
and everything will be ready for the true TD block when the NA block wears out.

" What would you do?"
If you were asked to give it all up fer freedom.

A little off topic but... This vehicle isn't on Lasqueti Island is it? I thought there was no form of motorized transportation on the island?

I don't know where you'd get an idea like that, I'm looking out the window at the 25 or so cars in my front yard ;D ;D, and yes, the van is on Lasqueti at the moment, so I can work on it in my shop, but it will be going back to Van. Isl. when I'm done.
