Title: 1Z Tdi cylinder head
Post by: rabbitpower on November 11, 2009, 09:38:23 am
I just picked up a 1Z Tdi and 02a trans. The timing belt was broken, so I expected the worst when I pulled the head. Amazingly, it looks as if the pistons are fine. I can only find very minimal damage to 2 valves. I am guessing the belt snapped when the engine was cranking over. My question is, How much is a used head going to cost me versus trying to install new valves?

Look for a vendor over at tdiclub named Frank06. Very well respected & does fantastic work... if you want a new to you head.

If you can find one in a "pull a Part" salvage yard around $65. But they are rare, there. If you want to be cheap I believe the 2.0 valves and lifters will work. Or Autohaas AZ has them for $7-15 ea.

I agree with these guys on Frank06 being a great shop, but any shop should be able to pull a few valves out and lap new ones in..

If it didn't overheat or beat the head up it should be as simple as cleaning the head, replacing the bent valves, any bad guides, lifters and seals.
