Title: Setting IP with dial gauge -Specs found !
Post by: the caveman on November 07, 2009, 02:04:51 pm
This is a follow up to a post i did in troubleshooting. i am have problems getting a rebuilt pump to run on a 1997 passat. I am looking for any reference as to what i can set the pump at with a gauge [like am IDI] before running it and setting the timing with my vag-com.

Okay i won't mention here how i got it running BUT i did find a tech bulletin for my question. Tech bulletin group 23 #97-03 from august 15 1997 mentions that it can be set at .7mm + or - .05 mm. Problem is that the size of the fitting on the pump isn't the same as an IDI pump. The early pumps [and the tool] have a thread of 8mm with a 1.0 pitch where as the TDI [at least the 1Z passat i was working on ] has a thread of 10 mm with a 1.0 pitch. I will make a tool  adaptor in the future , but at least there is some sort of spec for it.
See my post in troubleshooting for the " fix "

All of the TDI pumps we have in the shop use this style.

Brake line fittings are M10x1.

...as are oil pressure and coolant temp sensors.  An old brake fitting / sensor and an 8mmx1 tap builds you an adapter.  ;)

Your pump is almost built. It should be on the test stand on monday.

Vincent and Baxter-thanks. I may fit one up for the future. But i/m wondering if i'll ever run into such a problem again. Of course i shouldn't talk too soon, there will probably be one in this week.
And Tyler-AWESOME !

I do it often in the past with a dial indicator, usually between .70 to 1.00mm

The adaptor for TDI already exist in some kit, I see it on Ebay.
