Hi peeps
iam new to the forum & what ive read it looks great,,,iam in the stages of tuning my t4 van ive done most power mods
egr blank/turned up boost/boost gauge fitted/fuel screw tweeked up/fully hand made side exit using the original vw exhaust flange but opened up to accept the 2.5" inner diameter new generation impreza exhaust pipe work then going into a zostec can all unrestricted,,iam wanting some more is it right by fitting a AAZ pump this will achive power power/grunt :)
thanks Rick

take a 1.9 and 1.6 pump and build yourself a franken pump. it will put out plenty of fuel. AAZ pumps have stupid joke LDA's that dont really do anything. 1.6 pumps have good LDAs
-
thanks for replying
ive been told a straight swap Eg: fitting a AAZ pump would make a big difference to the 1.9t TD ABL but iam know pump expert :)
-
just search for people building fuel pumps. or the easiest thing to do would be to put the top off a 1.6 pump on a 1.9 pump body.
-
Check the pump number, ABL might have 8mm pump.
-
the easy way is to look for a peugeot or Citroen pump as they have all the adjustments on the lda but make sure its a td and bosch not lucas the peugeot 405-306 before1995 are about the best that is if you have a manual cold start lever[ choke] if not later year models would be better. To be safe you should really fit a inter cooler as the bog standard pug pump is set up for 90 odd hp I did the swap last winter on a t4 it was ok all winter but middle of summer head gasket blew i have since fitted a chargecooler upped the fuel and boost with no problems ,but probably needs oil cooler
-
forgot to say to make sure its a 1900cc not 1800cc as the 18 has a 8mm pumps not 9mm and if you are looking for a bit more the later Peugeot 406 has a 10mm pump but has got electronic cold start control but you can swap the 10mm head onto the the earlier pump that would give you a lot more scope for more power its also worth looking at the 406 injectors if you go down the 10mm road as they have a 170-180[ bar]brake pressure

yes mate my T4 as the manual cold start, iam going to fit a inter-cooler in the bumper but not so it says "LOOK AT ME" more a subtle discreet look,,did fitting the pump t4 your t4 make it worth doing power/grunt/drivable wise

funny you should say that cause i was talking to a diesel guy today & he said the pumps are basically the same apart from the tops

pardon my ignorance but iam not too up on the 8mm thing,,i guess bigger that is the better
-
@ tune bandit The 8mm bit refers to the diameter of the plunger of the pump [basically the the bigger the the diameter the more fuel you inject]= more power you produce providing you got the boost to match. As for the pug pump on my t4 it will stay with the standard 2.5 tdi [inter cooled version] no problem if not a bit quicker but you must have a decent inter cooler other wise you will end up melting some thing. The standard 1.9 pug pump is set up for 90hp as standard used with a suitable inter cooler and needs very little modification to fit your engine, just the cold start lever [the pug has a temperature controlled cold start via a cable coming from the cylinder head] and drive pulleys and possibly delivery valves .P.S the standard abl engine produces 68hp, with very little adjustment you should be able to get 100-110hp with out changing the plunger and head using the pug/citroen pumps
-
forgot to say you have probably got a immobilizer on your pump which will have to be removed or swapped i think there is a thread on that some where on this site
-
thanks eta55 you clearly know your stuff :) ive got pictures of the pump that i can get my hands on,,once ive bought it iam going to get it overall-ed as from what ive read most folk that have fitted theses pumps seem to have problems due to leaks probs due to the fact of the age of the pump,,diesel guy i spoke to yesterday said its not the pumps at fault its the seals as they were fitted to millions of vehicles,,mods ive done to my T4 have made a big difference over standard with out question,,the most noticeable one been my hand made by me side exit exhaust system, the vw front pipe exhaust flange is very restricted as i found when i removed the total exhaust, the manifold exit is massive then the front pipe is very small so this is what i did
(http://i559.photobucket.com/albums/ss34/triumph595/T4Vanmods013.jpg)
chopped flange with standard piece of front pipe
(http://i559.photobucket.com/albums/ss34/triumph595/T4Vanmods014.jpg)
all the required bends/straights & modded vw flange(http://i559.photobucket.com/albums/ss34/triumph595/T4Vanmods015.jpg)
opened up cleaned & burred front pipe flange
(http://i559.photobucket.com/albums/ss34/triumph595/T4Vanmods017.jpg)
front pipe now completed with skinny standard vw exhaust to the side
(http://i559.photobucket.com/albums/ss34/triumph595/T4Vanmods018.jpg)
all the pipe work i used i managed to get from a damaged "New Shape" impreaz cut all the back bits out & that's what i came up with,,all going to/welded into a straight through zorstec silencer/can "Throaty diesel sound"

numbers on the AAZ pump are as follows
pully No: 028130111C
Pump Housing just says BOSCH on it.
LDA cap No: 1465530724.
pics ive been sent are as follows

good job on exhaust it always helps on a td engine to get rid of the gases quicker it also removes heat, as for the pump you have the right boost pin but the top of the aaz pump dose not have the adjustment for the boost pin so you are limited to just changing the spring rate compared to what you have on the peugeot pumps which are basically the same as the vw 1.6 td pumps, plus the aaz in stock form is set up for 75hp compared to the 90 hp on the pug pump all thougt you have got the same potential as they are both 9mm pumps ,if i was in your position i would be looking for a different top the one you need has a locking nut in a reses right on the top of the pump which allows you to adjust how much movement you get on the boost pin which intern determines how much extra fuel you get when on boost plus there is another internal adjustment and between the two you can adjust how much extra fuel and,
,when you start to get it.It is not just the performance aspect i say this as i have seen pepole use the more aggressive boost pins in aaz pumps and suffer from to much fuel early in the boost cycle which produces exes black smoke .the m.o.t mans little machine don't like that but the boost pin wll make a noticeable difference in the aaz pump over the abl pump which is basically a normally aspirated pump
-
you will have to swap the springs around on your boost pins
-
yeah i do think i will keep my eyes open for the adjustable top type one,but for now i reckon i can still have fun messing with this,,,what iam not getting my head around is guy from other forum mentioned "does it come with the bracket & proper bolts"
iam assuming it bolted straight onto the block,,& iam struggling to find a comprehensive diagram or pictures for this,,ive never had the pump off my t4 but iam also wanting all the required stuff for when i crack on with as i need it back on the road within the day ish really,,ive also noticed my pump as 2 sets of wires going to it so again there's still plenty for me to research before iam totally happy with what i need plus parts
-
The brackets of your pump/engine will fit ,you got no problems there the two wires you talk about on your pump /are they going to a box where the fuel shut of solenoid is if so you will have to either drill or grind the heads off the anti tamper bolts[small versions of ignition barrel bolts] securing it, and transfer it to the new pump as that is part of the immobilizer ,or run another live from the ignition ,not sure you get a live with out it as i have always carefully drilled out the bolts and replaced them with capheads there handy things to have are imoblizer. As for finding a new top you would be better of just using the hole pump because the chances are the top will come from a pug or Citroen and you will be starting from a90bhp factory set base line why try to re invent the wheel, and waste time and money on buying seals and swapping the tops when you can just swap the whole pump and have a 20 odd hp gain all set by the factory and the work your way up from there? /the Americans on this site are swapping the tops from the 1.6 td because they don't have easy access to the amount of pumps as we do in the uk there must be in excess of 20 different vehicles [cars/vans] that use the type of pump they are building [1.6top1.9 bottom ]but that is done more out of necessity than choice. If you are looking for a lot of power the pump to look out for is one of a renault master /peugeot boxer 2.8 td as they are 12mm pumps
-
If you were refering to the wires on the aaz pump it is because you have a electronic cold start ,but it is simple to wire up to a switch, it just requiers a live and you just flick the swicth instead of useing the choke lever,

the pump that's on the van at the moment as the pull choke type cold start,,its easy enough to swap solenoids by the sounds of it,,yeah your right its best staying put with this pump tops as you say plenty in the UK,,do like the sound of the bigger pumps though,,,but i cut my teeth of the one that should be with me this week,,i will let you know how i get on,,,,,you been a great help & i take my hat off to you & the knowledge you have on diesels 8)
