Title: Manual Boost Controller fitting help please!
Post by: monkey46 on October 28, 2009, 05:18:14 pm
Hi guys just got myself a mk2 golf 1.6gtd I love it! Slowly upgrading the engine but getting bits and pieces in place before I tune it. I have fitted a boost gauge between the LDA and inlet manifold and am showing a solid 10psi of boost when hard on the throttle. I now want to fit a boost controller. I've turned the fuel "cone" under the diaphram in the fuel pump and turned the fuel up a bit with the max fuel screw. Also turned the spring seat down a bit under the fuel pump diaphram.   Not gonna go too crazy before I fit a fmic and at least 2" bore exhaust. So..........

I'm having trouble finding a vacuum from the manifold to fit the boost controller T piece. All I can find (without getting under the car yet) is a very small length of vacuum hose between the actuator and turbo, can it go here? Looks like a bugger to fit without removing parts to get to it! I've never fitted one before so any help would be great! Pics also help!  ;)

Cheers

Marc

Ok thank you, so I will just need a slightly longer length of vacuum hose I think!  :)

Does anyone actually have experience of fitting a boost controller? As the connection between the actuator and turbo has literally less than an inch of vacuum to play with between the solid pipes of the turbo and actuator! I don't see that it's gonna work here even taking two new lines from each to T into, I think the two lines will pinch eachother shut as they come out off the turbo and actuator!

HELP PLEASE!!!!!!

it will fit, just make the lines longer.

most boost controllers are bleed type valves, they dont really require vacuum. just split the line and put the boost controller there.... or get different line from an auto parts store to give you a little more slack.

it'll be just fine there.

Cheers guys it's in now but it's running around 18psi even wound right in! (less boost) it was a solid 10psi before, drops off slightly to around 15-16 psi at sustained full throttle, is this because the fuel is dropping off? (I haven't done the governer mod yet) I don't wanna blow my engine up so is 18psi safe on the standard ic, exhaust, head bolts etc? Cheers guys this is the first engine I've ever messed with and don't want to kill it! lol  ;D

yea as soon as the governor mod is done, you'll be not dropping boost til you hit the hard governor.

you wont seriously mess anything up till you get closer to 30 or 40 psi boost. then gaskets start leaking, and blocks start cracking. and heads start lifting.

Did you block the diverter valve on the intake manifold? It opens at 15-16psi.

Cheers for the replies guys the help is really appreciated!  BSD Yeah did that with the M6x20mm allen bolt =] worked a treat! I'm just having trouble locating a performance exhaust system here in the uk, think I may have to get one built but that will cost $$$!  ::)

Will any other readily available vag exhaust bolt up easy enough with a little modification? My uncle is a fantastic welder!

I'll post up some pics of the car if there is a reader's rides section =]

Any Golf/GTI MK2 exhaust will fit under the car. The main difference is the downpipe and the flange it uses. You could get a nice 2.25 or 2.5" aftermarket exhaust and make a custom downpipe.
