Title: Brazilian Diesel Engine...Parts?
Post by: Luv My Volkswagen on October 20, 2009, 01:38:57 pm
Hello everyone,
I've been away for a long time...I just got back from Iraq and its time to get the old Rabbit running again.

I took the car to a mechanic for a reoccurring problem, and he informed me that my engine is not the 1.5 that originally came in the car, but a 1.7 imported from Brazil. I was wondering...who imports these motors, and can I get parts for them? I need the original alternator bracket with the original bolt and rubber isolation bushing. I tried to search the forum for any information on this but its possible I could have missed something. If anyone could help me out, that would be great. Thanks.

Welcome back from Iraq !  :)

1.7 sounds kinda odd.
There were 1.7 gasoline engines, is all i've heard of.
Did he go into any further detail as to why he considered it to be a 1.7 ?

You can check your block code, and get the casting numbers from the head and block to cross reference. Might want to double check that. fwiw

I have heard about the existence of a 1.7 industrial motor, which has the bore of a 1.9 and the stroke of a 1.6

good luck finding parts, they probably only exist in other countries.

Could you find another car to compare it to? I could be wrong but I would have thought parts like the alternator bracket would be the same as on another engine as VW seems to have used a lot of common components and designs through different years and models, including the gasoline models.

Per http://www.autoexpress.co.uk/carreviews/usedcartests/33781/volkswagen_lupo.html (http://www.autoexpress.co.uk/carreviews/usedcartests/33781/volkswagen_lupo.html):

1999: Lupo introduced to UK with a choice of 50bhp 1.0 or 75bhp 1.4-litre petrol engines, plus a 100bhp 16-valve 1.4 Sport version. A 60bhp SDI 1.7-litre diesel is also offered, returning 65mpg, albeit with sluggish performance.

I think I've heard of later diesel Vanagons in Europe coming with 1.7s.

I think you should climb under the car and have a look at the back of the block to see what is stamped there.
