Title: more 1.6 TD vs 1.9 TD
Post by: larry104 on October 05, 2005, 06:48:22 am
I'm new to VW diesels. I've driven Hondas for years and have gotten 42 mpg from my '93 Civic EX. I'm used to 125 hp and a 6,500 rpm redline, so a diesel is going to be an adjustment. But I've always been intrigued by diesels and want to give one a try. I'm also considering a vegetable oil conversion. I've read some of the material on this board, which is a great resource by the way. Anyhow, I'm looking at a 1986 Jetta 1.6 NA and I want more power. I'd like to drop in a 1.9 L TD. I understand there are some differences in motor mounts, but it seems pretty straightforward. My question is, is it worth doing? Would it make more sense to find a 1.6 TD instead? Is the difference in performance that noticeable? Does anyone have hp/torque numbers on these motors? I also get the impression that 1.9 L motors are harder to find parts for and they more expensive than for the 1.6 L, especially in the U.S. What's been your experience? Thank you.

Larry, as you probably know by now, the 1.9TD was never imported to the USA. They can be found, but not easily. Since you are new to diesels and presumably VW's, I suggest you consider the 1.6TD route for a first iteration. The 1.6 N/A can be made into a fair machine, with a high rev limit, but it will never compete with an equally well prepared 1.6TD. Pass on the 1.6 and find a TD. 'Nuf said.

As you continue to read threads you will eventually find that 100 hp and 6500 rpm are doable with a well built 1.6TD, taking advantage of all the advances laid out on these pages. That may seem a bit down on power compared to the Honda, but since you'll be developing twice the torque I am confident you'll not be disappointed.

Good luck with your project!  :D

...much appreciated. Sounds like the 1.6 TD is the way to go.
