Title: how do you get the speedo gear out?
Post by: theman53 on October 02, 2009, 04:46:26 am
I have the hold down off. The rubber piece pulled up. I have wiggled the cable and just don't have the guts to put a prybar on it. The gear is stuck. I have sprayed it down with free all and walked away, but in the meantime is there something I don't know or see that should be done to get it out. It is stuck pretty hard and I do not want to take it out in pieces.

I will try pulling while spinning something since I have everything disconnected except the speedo cable and the rear mount...it is ready to come out, I just need to get that stinking cable out.

Disconnect the speedo cable from the speedometer. Pull the cable through the firewall and leave it in the tranny.

If you catch it on the edge as you pull it out, the speedo gear can fall inside the trany with little hope of easily getting it out.

If it would move I would probably catch it on edge. I can't get it to budge...yet.

That's strange, I've never heard of that.  I just swapped speedo gears this weekend, I know it does not take a lot of effort to pop the gear off of the cable.  I'd say turning the transmission while gently pulling might work.

Alright here is the MFOIUHNDG thing. I know it has the bolt in there, but I take that out when trying to get the gear out and put it back so I don't lose it. I cannot scratch anything up here to get the gear and cable out. I have looked in the bentley and called some people and it isn't doing anything. I would cut the cable and buy new, but I still need that gear when it is all said and done. Any helpful thoughts would be great.

I've always simply took the hold down bolt out and pull it out, sometimes it's a little bit stuck.

There's nothing holding it in the tranny other than that bolt, and if you pull too hard it'll come off the cable. Turning the tranny is kinda the only thing you can do.........maybe try pulling a little bit harder? Weird :-\

Yeah I ripped the plastic liner I pulled so hard and I did put it in gear and rocked it back and forth. The metal tab that it shows in the bentley is up and the rubber piece, but no go. The added benefit of me never having on out to see what the heck isn't helping either. That cable and the passenger rear mount is all that is keeping me from selling that old N/A block to the guy in the FS section and me getting my engine in there.
Please more help...short of 2 stroke gas and match though. Here is the pic again.

Does it push in any?
Title: Re: how do you get the speedo gear out?
Post by: theman53 on March 30, 2010, 07:29:09 pm
nope, I have pushed and pulled in every direction which makes me think it is something simple that I am just overlooking. Hence the pic and asking the smart fellers out there in VW land. I have sprayed it with lubes, pulled with pliers, wiggled, danced, and tried holding my mouth in different ways...still no dice.

That looks rusted in there nicely..   Maybe Broke has a better idea, but the last one I had that looked like that I ended up destroying the cable to get it out..   Cut the housing, pull what is left of the cable out, screw a lag bolt in and used the slide hammer...
Title: Re: how do you get the speedo gear out?

if that has to happen, where do I get another cable and gear. Please let me get it out though.

Chances are the gear will be fine..  If you end up needing a cable gimme a shout, I got one or six laying around I can ship your direction.. MK2 right?
Title: Re: how do you get the speedo gear out?
Post by: theman53 on March 30, 2010, 08:28:44 pm
yep
Sounds good. I guess I could try the vice grips again and just keep pulling. My one pal told me not to break the cable as a little piece will fall into the trans and then you have to go trans fishing. I don't know about that though?
Title: Re: how do you get the speedo gear out?

Here's what you are dealing with down below..

Gear Removed
(http://i295.photobucket.com/albums/mm124/maxfax3/VW/speedo2.jpg)

The gear is only connected to the cable itself by a little snap ring that fits inside the gear..   When you cut the cable and pull the remaining core out you would run the risk of the gear fallin in..  The one I cut the cable on I was tearing the trans down so it wasn't a big deal..  But if you could get a lag in there and leave the remaining cable core int eh gear you would at least maybe be able to get it with a magnet...

I had this same problem when I removed the 1.5 from my rabbit.  The cable and plastic gear would not budge.  I'm guessing it had never been removed before.  In the end, impatience led me to snip the cable.  Once the transmission was on a table I was able to pry the gear out using a flathead/vice grip without too much trouble.

Stick a screwdriver under the metal cup and pry it out.
Can you see there is a metal lip around the hole.
Get something under it and pry it out of the trany hole.
Don't lose the plastic gear in the trany,..
if you just pull the cable really hard, when it lets go it will probably catch the plastic gear on the edge of the hole as it pulls out and the plastic gear will fall into the trany.

Post by: rabbitman on March 31, 2010, 01:17:11 am
Yeah I forgot about that cup, last tranny I pulled was kind of a pain iirc. Had to really tweek on it to get it out, I also pried under the cup to loosen it.........but it was -30F so things were stiff ::).

A mk2 cable at napa was $35 a couple weeks ago, without a gear.

When most people lose the gear in there they just forget about it. Steel > plastic is the theory. They just change the fluid a couple hundred later

Now I am seeing a bit... The metal that the bolt holds down that makes it L shaped from that pic is already up. The round part and gear is all that is left in the hole. As you can see I have scratched with a screw driver in my pic and no luck yet, but now I know what I am looking for.
Idea: would it be fine to run a tek screw into the round part while in the trans and pry like crazy. Take it out and put it in 180 degrees and do the same over and over? This would deform it and hopefully make it all come out in one piece. If that sounds good to you guys I think I will do it. The round part comes with a new cable and the only separate peice is the gear right?

Doesn't sound like a bad idea to me..  That's basically what I think happened when I put the screw down the center.. And the way you speak of would lessen the chances of having to go gear fishing..      And yes the round part comes with the cable..  New one's are just less the gear...

I'm guessing there will be some never seize involved for the reinstallation??  ;D

go through the fill hole, might be able to get in there and pry it up. mines stuck in too. i just un do it from the black box on the firewall. but on a diesel you dont have that black box on the firewall do you? only gasser mk2's right?
Title: Re: how do you get the speedo gear out?

yep. The black box I believe is the counter that tells the light to come on for emmissions on gassers. Don't know as I never had MKII gasser, but have heard.

You could probably put a rod against it and smack the edges,
it should break up the aluminum/metal corrosion that is holding it in.

Drain oil, fill with ether, light ether with lighter, reinstall seals that blew out, maybe the speedo gear will blow out to :P.

I think he unbolted it and just put the bolt back in the hole.

YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I got it out. I definately need a new cable, but the gear is out. I guess enough tapping, spraying with free all, wiggling, tapping, hitting really hard with hammer, leaving it sit for a week, doing it all over, and then grabbing it with some vice grips and giving it what for...It comes out.
Thanks guys.

My question is how in the F did that happen in the first place?  Plastic cannot seize to metal, no matter how hard you try.   ???  Especially when the metal in question is constantly bathed in gear oil.

Glad you got it though.

steel gets stuck to aluminum. the end of my cable is steel where it goes into the trans, not plastic.
Title: Re: how do you get the speedo gear out?

there is supposed to be a little plastic/rubber gasket between the cable flange and the transmission.
Title: Re: how do you get the speedo gear out?
Post by: theman53 on April 06, 2010, 03:51:19 pm
See the supposed to and actual is usually almost never all there.

No gasket in between. The drill and vicegrips ate it up enough to let the free all in I suppose, then I pulled it all apart.

Going over now to do some more welding.

Ah I get it.  I thought that the metal part was already up, and the gear was actually stuck in there.

Yeah, I think that gasket might help prevent the dissimilar metals from sticking.  I made sure to put a new one on the Golf while it was out.

i didnt get that lucky. my speedo cable is part of the trans as of right now. im sure i could get it out if i really wanted to, but it works, and its there, so its staying there till i need it out.

I dunno what the problem is Lucas.

I popped mine out in 3 minutes to top up the lost trans oil from a leaking end cap, and popped it back in. Weird that you had to fight so much with yours ;)

Yes it sucked. It is out. Now I definately need a new cable. I will have to see if napa or similar has one.
