Title: A thing about batteries I experienced
Post by: Zulfiqar on September 30, 2009, 11:31:17 am
Hi guys
needed to buy a battery for a 1.6 motor - so hunted to find one, being Pakistan DIN batteries are more rare than rocking horse poo - you cant buy proper fresh imported ones coz the local manufacturers cartel have lobbied to put up an embargo on battery import. Anywayss

the newer calcium batteries need a higher voltage about 14.7 to 15V for the electrolyte to bubble and produce some current for storing, while the older antimony batteries were happy with 13.8 or 14V tops - this coming from the battery manufacturers mouth. So being a good little boy I bought a locally made EN spec lead antimony battery with 80AH rating, unknown CCA coz they wont tell me the CCA rating, made my own electrolyte with hospital spec distilled water and lab spec H2SO4, nice charge hold in the batt, after the initial charge. Cranked the engine like it was dope for the starter.

my alternator regulator quits at 13.9V and at this voltage the electrolyte is quietly happily bubbling while the old calcium AC DELCO battery which was only 4 months old would not do anything unless the voltage went to 14.7 at least. Premature death anyone.

So when you buy a battery be sure of the chemistry and whether your cars alternator can keep up with the voltage requirement of it.

have to install a old generator onto the car and set up the regulator to a high voltage. good for the batt bad for the lites and other things.

the lighting etc can easily handle 14.5 or 15V - because I believe the older 1.5 diesel motorola alternators with external regulators worked at a 15V cutoff

the lights not so much. They don't get a full 12V on the stock harness. He may have issues with the stock harness getting hot when he uses the lights and other accessories though.
