Title: WTB: 1.5/1.6 Diesel engine - longblock or shortblock
Post by: vwmike on October 03, 2005, 03:31:26 am
I just bought a 79 diesel Rabbit which from what the previous owner said it sounded like they didn't clean out the bolt holes in the block when they installed a new cylinder head and it has since cracked. I don't know if I feel like rebuilding an engine so it would be cool if I could get my hands on another longblock or shortblock depending on what is available. I'll be able to tell more definitely what is wrong when I get out there and play with it tomorrow but in the mean time I figured I'd get the word out. Thanks!

There has to be something closer than Ontario.

I pulled the head off and it looks like they had a 1.6 head with 12mm bolts on it. I'll have to check it for straightness, but I see no cracks between the valves so I guess I need a 1.6 short block with 12mm head bolts or a complete engine. I'd really like to find a TD, so if anyone has one around that is in good running condition I'd consider shipping that.

The block in this car is destroyed (very cracked).

I have an excellent 1.6NA short block that I *might* let go. It has 80k on it, very good condition, has brackets, pan, crank, rods, pistons, flywheel, and clutch (currently all still assembled). Ready to have a head bolted on and dropped in. I am nearby, in Seattle. Email me at [email protected] if you're interested.

E-mail sent  :D

Hopefully this one works out. I can't really use a 1.5 at this point since the head I have is for 12mm bolts.

Well...my inbox is empty...try again? I'll PM you a better email address and a phone number, just don't want those out there in public.

The motor is supposedly out of an '84 Rabbit (that ran perfectly, they took this lovely diesel out for a 16v gasser swap  :x ), so it should be what you are looking for in terms of bolt size, etc. I also have a ton of old 12mm bolts laying around so you could try one out just to be certain.

It has actually only been sitting a few months since it last ran; you could just slap a head on and maybe some fresh gaskets, or if you wanted to go full bore you could pop out the pistons, give it a quick hone, and slap some new rings in it. Everything is tight right now though, and the bores look fine last I checked.

I kinda liked the idea of having a spare short block laying around...but then again, space is a problem, and I did just rebuild the engine that is already in my car, and it sounds like you are a dieseler in need, so maybe we can work out a deal. Wish I had some pics, sorry, can't take any, but the journey to Seattle ain't that long for you.

you can run a 12mm head on a 11mm block all you have to do is shim the holes on the outer four bolts of the head. take a pop can and cut it up to wrap the aluminum around the outer four bolts just once, put them in and bolt it down.

fyi, 1.5's are expensive to rebuild, IIRC.
