Its supposed to be drop in deal on mk2. (not your answer or question .... but getting there)

Mk2 engine is basically drop in deal on Mk1 ... other than Inj pump bracket swap.

So I hope its a sweet exchange to put AAZ into Mk1 Truck.
I'm pondering the same upgrade.

The Inj Pump bracket/engine mount for Mk1 is only thing that i'm thinking might could complicate it - along with if Mk1 accessories and brackets will bolt up onto 1.9 the same.

I'm interested in same info / swap as you.

some info, although I don't like the engine bracket mod better to do it properly with a MK1 bracket

I just finished the exact swap... well not exactly, it was dropped into a rabbit but the caddy has the same engine mount setup. I used the passenger side mount of a gas mk1, i too didnt want to cut the other bracket up. If you plan to use the AAZ timing belt cover you will need to cut a small section out of it (i can get pics of how the mount looks and how much to trim for the belt cover)

Stewardc,

I would say you look real good under the hood ... but it would be such an understatement.

DAMMM MAN you went to the lengths ! Kill Dog Kill

I'm going to do my 81 about 1 or 2 notches under that level.
Highly presentable with some attention to detail.

Do you have a build thread on this Truck ?

Mine is heavy and will be hauling additional weights on top of that from time to time - i want max full GRuNT that can be had from a VW 4cyl IDI Dzl. So i'm thinking maybe to go 1.9 instead of 1.6

I was told today that there are 2 diffrnt versions of 1.9TD.
The Inj Pump Mount - one is larger than 1.6, and one is same as 1.6
The larger one (68mm) is said to be more hassle to deal with.
I have no further knowledge beyond that.

The 1.9 is definitely the way to go. Mine is from a 1996 Passat wagon, and you should go with as late an engine as you can. The difference is in the bottom end...later is stronger.
I've never heard about the mount issue.
Go with a Giles pump for sure....the guy is a genious. Also, the Garrett T3 spools slower than the stock turbo, but makes more ponies when needed.
I really couldn't be happier. I'm presently doing a powdercoated oil pan, and a new turbo oil return into the block (presently using a 1.6TD pan with return there.). I'm also refinishing an oldskool Neuspeed strutbar to match the Scirocco K brace presently installed.
Do these projects ever end?
Here's a few pics of my old 1.6TD setup.

Wow stewardc, I don't know how I missed really noticing your caddy before. I think that's the nicest IDI I've ever seen! Could you explain a bit about the oil drain directly to block?

A 1.6 drains into the pan through a welded-in bung while the 1.9 has a fitting in the lower part of the block. For ease, we just reused the ond 1.6 pan and drain, but I now have enough fittings to put a stainless braided AN hose onto the turbo drain and connect it into the block.

 I also have this nice new 1.9 pan all powdercoated and ready;

At that time, I'll also revamp the engine breather system;

So the 1.6 pan fits on the AAZ block as well?

Yes, all early VW pans are the same, except for the 1.6TD which has a bung welded onto it.
