I got the golf home friday and It has hard to start today when it was HOT out. I cycled the GPs twice and turned it over and it was VERY Slugish turning over the first 3 turns then it started turning over normal, I stoped cycled the GPs once more and started it at half throttle and it started and idled really rough, when i would rev it up it would give off big clouds out of Blueish Black smoke till it was warmer, .....Whats going on with this car? The previous owner told me I should replace the GPs soon.
-
maybe your air filter?
-
Would that cause it to be slugish turning over
-
I don't know if worn injectors could do that or not but I do know they can drip inside when the engine is off, That could account for the slow initial cranking speed with fuel taking up some of the compression area and also for the smoking till warmed up. I'd pull the plugs out and see if they are eroded on the ends, that is an indication of leaking injectors. If they are worn just get a set from Giles so you know what you have to begin with. Some of this other stuff can be worse than what you already have to begin with. When he said it would probably need GP's soon he'd probably already changed them a few times from this same problem and fealt it coming on again.

Heavy turn over, Very rough Idle at first, and Heavy knocking from motor, and it Shakes like hell when idling. When I take off at normal RPM when driving...it stalls. I thought about it being an Injector. I may have to get a set since these do have 358000km on them

I would at least check to see that it is still timed somewhere close to 1.0 m/m though first. But it's hard to tell about an iinjector problem by looking at it other than if the tip is wet after you take it out but you say it is knocking pretty good too and they will cause that also. Like I said before if the G/P tips are eroded it is a definate sign they are bad but could be bad otherwise. I'd just call Giles and get a set to be sure and you can trust his rebuilt ones over someone else's supposedly new ones and his prices aren't any worse than anybody else's either. Don't even think about just getting a set of nozzles yourself and sticking them in. It's very easy to do but the big thing is they are not calibrated like they should be. I did it one time and they made so much noise I put the old nozzles back in. I mic'ed everything comparing the old to the new but there's more to it than that evidently and if you don't have a pop tester, a hundred different shims and a lot of time and patience to lapp the surfaces it isn't gonna be right even though you might think it is and misdiagnose the problem and put a lot of un-needed parts on in the process.

I just want to keep the motor in it running...I'm building a new motor for it so I don't want to spend a couple hundered in a motor thats getting pulled next summer.
-
Well my 92 has 516k on it and the po original owner said he has never changed them. The car runs but nails and idles rough. Its amazing what a new set of injectors will do.
-
well I guess new injectors I could reuse in the new motor...I had it running today and even when its warm its hard turning over, I'm going to swap the starter this week and test that. And going to check the GPs...When teh car was running at Normal running temp and I would go to WOT there would be CLOUDS of black Smoke...I'm gessing its getting too much fuel
-
That's exactly what my car is doing, the collar is still on the fuel screw, nothing has been played with (yet).
-
Then I guess its the injectors, How hard are they to swap?,
-
Real easy, just get the right size socket, and be careful when your taking them out cause you can crack the injector boss easily. Are you getting new nozzles? Or just whole new injectors. Aaz are dual pulse right?
-
they have 358000km on them and I will want to put them in the new motor so I'm guess whole new injectors
-
Yeah good call, there is also Vince's write up on how to rebuild them, just out new nozzles in.
-
how much are new nozzles?
-
New nozzles are not available for the AAZ. Bosch never made them.
It sounds like retarded, or possibly overly advanced timing to me. Does playing with the cold start change the cranking speed at all?
-
no and sometimes the Coldstart Cable won't go back in...Have to fight with it.

I went a little long between cleaning my K&N air filter and it did exactly what you describe...turning over slow, smoking on startup...even when hot! These things love air even more than fuel! Before doing anything else replace your airfilte with a k&n cone filter (a 3" fits over the end of the stock intake hose perfectly) if that doesn't do it then its fuel related but at least you will have air.
-
Well the air filter was black lol. I'm going to put one I have here
