Title: rear main seal
Post by: skifree on September 11, 2009, 05:28:20 pm
Just had the pleasure of taking my fresh rebuilt 1.6 td out of my Vanagon, to replace the Sabo brand rear main seal with a Victor Reinz brand. The thing leaked like the Exxon Valdez,it was installed correctly ,definetly a difference between the two seals. I hope I don't end up with another gusher up front. Thanks Myke fo the Victor Reinz seal.

No, I installed it in the carrier first.

Did you seat it flush with the face of the seal carrier?

on my jetta when i did my td swap, i put a new one in with a new clutch while the engine was sitting on the garage floor, then once it was all in the car that one leaked, then i got another one from napa and through it in (not really through it in since u have to remove the trans its kind of a hassle just to do a seal)  and the napa seal also worked then i bought some double lipped seal i forget where i even got it, regardless, it solved the problem.  me and my dad were getting skillful with tranmission removal
