Title: 1Z crankshaft question
Post by: jack's lack on September 08, 2009, 08:21:38 pm
What is this disk on the 1Z crank that is not on the AAZ crank? and can I remove it?
I posted this in my build thread, but the general section gets almost no traffic, so I figured I would ask over here
Thanks

Are you sure that's not a gasser crank? Maybe my eyes are tricking me, but the flywheel bolt holes don't look staggered like they should be on a diesel crankshaft.

oh, the flywheel bolts up just fine, probably just the photo. I bought it from a guy in Canada on the vortex. He was parting out a TDI and he said it was a 1Z. I took him on his word.
Apart from the D-shaped keyway and the piece in question they appear to be identical. I failed to mention that this is going in my AAZ to preclude the whole keyway disaster scenario. I thought that was a given, but hindsight makes me think I should have mentioned it in my original post

On the 1Z TDI, there is a crank sensor that is machined into the block which uses that sensor plate.  It can be removed if you like, but it doesn't do any harm.  The sensor is used for an input to the electronic injection system on the TDI.

Thanks, I just found it in the Bentley. I guess I should have looked a little harder first. It adds weight to a rotating part, granted it isn't much, but since the IDI doesn't need it I think I will remove it.

yea, thats just a reluctor ring. you dont need it if you are going to be running IDI.
