Title: AAZ Head Question
Post by: stomperz71 on August 18, 2009, 08:38:32 pm
I'm in the process of rebuilding my 1.9 AAZ engine. When stripping the head down 2 of the lifters(I have hydraulic lifters)won't come out. They seem to stuck in one spot like their not floating in the bore. They move up/down but won't spin. Whats the best way to get them out? What would of caused this to happen?

Thanks

I took out one of mine that was sticky with a strong magnet and lots of Kroil... work it around alot, they will give up, they're sort of hydro-locked in the bore sometimes

I tried that until I was blue!! >:( I was thinking next to just weld a nut on top and slide hammer it out. I know themn I would have to get new lifters. But I'm out of ideas???

drill a small hole in them, and put in a self tapping screw, then use the slide hammer

Either way it would be junk afterwards, right?

It's possible the valves contacted the pistons and mushroomed the lifters, and that's why they're stuck, the only way you can tell if it's junk is to take them out and examine the bore.

That could be the case, I bought the engine with a broken timing belt. I know theirs one bent valve, could be others just can't tell. The pistons all looked OK.

I've seen plenty of IDI's with broken belts and nice looking pistons, generally thery are still usable unless they have major damage.

You might try heating around the bore with a torch while holding the head upside down.

I'd recommend replacing all lifters if you broke a belt on the motor too.
