Title: very irritating
Post by: vwjones on August 09, 2009, 11:17:29 am
did a NA to TD conversion with a 1.6 gtd with a T2 garret turbo.  Half the fun of the conversion was to hear the turbo spooling up.  I ran a 2.75" exhaust from turbo back.  fired it up today finally, (started in about 2 cranks ;D) runs like a sewing machine but as far as hearing the turbo....not so much.  I'm running a mazda intercooler that was listed as one of the best flowing intercoolers in an intercooler comparison.  it has a 1 1/2"  input so i'm running 1 1/2" intercooler lines.  think that might dampen the sound?  runs nice, but is bittersweet without the  turbo whine.  :(

did ya run a muffler?
whats up with all you guys not being able to hear your turbos?
i have mufflers on both my cars and still have loud turbos.
i have a flowmaster on my rabbit, and a 18 inch glass pack on my 5000.

also alot of times, you wont hear the turbo, but the people around you and behind you will hear it great.

nope, no muffler.  just a 2.75 all the way back.  maybe i need to stand behind it.  thanks for the reply though.  I like your screen name and was going to put "steroid bunny" on the tailgate of my caddy until I saw your name......great minds....

you can put steriod bunny on there if you want, i would take no offense to it. i think it would be kinda cool. and uh, 2.75 should get your turbo singin'. but just something to think about... these things will never sound like a scummins, or a power joke, or a duramax, we just dont have huge enough turbos to make that kinda noise.

my audi almost sounds like a scummins tho. even with a cherry bomb i can still hear turbo scream.

;DTake the capacitor off the alternator, and enjoy the whine on your radio ;D

well, i didn't wind it up much.  it was just a test fire. still need to hook up my egt and my boost gauge and my water pump to cool the turbo and my alcohol fuel injection system and my intercooler fan and....and....and....ok, better get back to work.  maybe i'll make a punch list.

STEROID BUNNY  it shall be

My turbo got louder when I took off the stock air filter box and went with a cone...  Still have stock exhaust.

FWIW...

I wonder if a 1000 watt amplified sub-woofer would help in that respect, or just go with about 5 or 6 tweeters ;D

Just rock one of these (http://cgi.ebay.com/Blow-Off-Turbo-Sound-VW-Golf-1-mk2-mk3-mk-1-2-3-4-Polo_W0QQitemZ370242427030QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM?hash=item56342b1896&_trksid=p3286.m63.l1177) and everyone who hears you drive by will think you're cool.
I have one of those on my shop vac, all the neighbors are getting one now that they've heard mine ;D

ha ha!  maybe that is what I need!  I am running a cone filter damnit!  I think my intercooler piping is deadening the sound.  that or maybe my aircraft spruce probe is stopping the turbo from spinning.  just my luck that it would be.

from what I have experienced the smaller the pipe the louder the turbo wine.....you cant barely hear my turbo on 3" straight pipe

*this is all "at idle" that I'm referring to*

figured it out.  hooked up my boost gauge and it showed a vacuum when accelerating.  i tore into the turbo and found a piece of wood stuck in the intake of the turbo.  makes me wonder if the previous owner was running without a filter at some point...oh well.  anyhoo, pulled the wood out and now it is spooling up to 10 psi pretty quick.  still not as loud as I had hoped, but sounds good none the less.  and i have boostage

That is sort of good news. Wondering why our truck wouldn't start, I did find an inside out dead mouse stuffed in the carburettor after it thought that the air filter of the Datsun truck was a genius place to build a nest..............WRONG! ::)

The thought of an inside-out dead mouse in a carburetor makes me laugh.  Kind of like in Galaxy Quest when they teleported that beast from the planet and it was inside out.  "And then it exploded..."  If you haven't seen that movie, you NEED to.

Almost as good as the 4BT sucking in a sparrow.  :o Sparrows and turbos don't mix well.
