i have a mk2 1.6 gtd and i have a mk3 1.9td (aaz engine)
which would better the mk2 with the aaz engine installed into it
or leave the mk3 and tweak that ????
-
They are both good engines but with pretty different characteristics. What are your goals for the car?
-
well either way they are better than petrol in costs/mpg so mpg isnt an issue
but yeh i`m after top end speed and set off speed
my mk2 1.6gtd tuned is quick but not quick enough
-
mk2 with the mk3 engine, but use the mk2 turbo setup, thats what im running, its pretty economical and a good bit of fun to drive :)
-
i spotted something about upgrading the injectors do u know anything about that ??
-
TBH im not too well clued up on injector swapping, but ive been lead to believe that for mild tuning the AAZ (mk3) injectors are good to go
-
well i collect my aaz mk3 next week so al see how she drives still in the mk3 body first and then see if she wants an older shell to ride in
cheers
-
you will love the torque of the 1.9. the only thing i would recommend is a taller transmission as the 1.9 doesn't like to rev like the 1.6.
-
which transmission would be best ?
-
Or put the 1.9 head on the GTD. If you go with the AAZ in the mk2, use the GTD pump and take the camplate out of the AAZ pump and put it in the 1.6 pump. The 1.6 pump has more adjustability than the AAZ pump. Don't bother messing with the nozzles, the GTD pump with the 1.9 camplate will put out more than enough fuel.
-
ok well i wont be doing anything just yet as i`m going to get the mk2 body all repaired and resprayed before i do any changes to the engine
cheers
-
You got any pics then Bob m'laddo?
-
i use a freinds tinterweb so i dont have any pics
ive got loads on my phone lol
well i got my mk3 (aaz) yesterday and she drives quite nice i`m suprised but i am still going to drop the aaz into my mk2 and shuv the gtd into my mk3 and use it for a while until i get everything sorted on the mk2 ... aaz requires a clutch desperatly and i aint sure if the 1.6 clutch will fit the 1.9

1.9 head on the GTD gets my vote!!! :D
-
well ive changed the boost pin i swapped it with the one out of my gtd and it made a hell of a difference ive turned the fuel up, blocked the wastegate/dumpvalve thing and its lovely now
next job is to do the gov mod and install the intercooler....... wow its going to be lovely when i put the engine into my mk2
-
nice one , i would put the aaz in the mk2 with the gtd turbo and a fmi ,rover boost pin , gov mod
-
yeh i am going to drop the aaz into my mk2 in a week or so.
i`m not sure about swapping the turbo tho as i`m fairly chuffed with the kkk turbo its pulls so well
and yes i will be doing the gov probably in the next few days when it stops raining lol
just a concern the rear engine mount on the mk3 is different to the mk2 the mk3 mount is dead
does anyone know if the mk2 bracket will go straight onto the aaz engine ??
also would the rad out of the mk3 go into the mk2 ???
-
itll sit on the gtd mounts no problem fella :)
-
i`m glad to hear that as the gtd mounts are brand new .. yippee
what about putting the mk3 rad into the mk2 ??
and would the mk3 driveshaft/cv fit onto the mk2 ??
-
the radiator will fit. as for the driveshafts, im still running the mk2 items on mine, only problem i have is chewing up cv joints because the cars so low ;)
-
yeh thats what ive done to mine the offside cv is on its way out so thought i would save some money and see if the mk3 would fit lol
cheers for the info
-
mk3 shafts are longer but the cv will fit your mk2 shafts , and as said your mk2 mounts will bolt up to the aaz ,
i had a mk2 1.6td in my other mk2 , done the gov mod , mod the lda pin , run more boost , put a wheel stud in the inlet man blow off valve , and this would pull as good as a mk2 8v gti and 125mph ;)
-
i am just making sure that ive got everything b4 i swap engines lol
oh that was another thing i was going to ask......would the mk3 bumpers fit the mk2 as its got the horrid small bumpers on my mk2 ??
-
I doubt the mk3 bumpers would fit. It's too bad you don't live in north america cuz small bumpers seem to be the trend these days and you could trade for a set of big bumpers easily.
-
This is a very general question.
I am little fed up of all the surplus code that JCE inserts in my Articles.
Can I use CSS to give me total control over the look and feel of the Article Content?
Any advice or views on this matter would be gratefully received.
Thanks
Rep.

ive still not managed to get round to swapping the engines
but ive got the aaz booked in for a cambelt change this friday finally
and i`m off to trackrod rally near pickering (uk) on 26th sept and that means me taking my car onto the gravel track to get to my aquired camping spot lol
so i wont be swapping the engines till the end of the month saves killing the underside of my mk2 on the track :)
-
Looks good mate!
Why do all the other GTD owners have to live so far? It would be good to meet up and compare cars & mods ;D
Oh the GTD's came with smaller bumpers as standard, I won a rear Big Bumper for £1 on ebay the other day ;D Just need to pick it up from a place 1.5hours away ::)
Just need a front big bumper, couple cans of red paint and raise my car from -80mm to something sensible about -40mm ;D
-
yeh when i get it all sorted we could arrange a meet sometime
getting the cam belt changed on monday then i will be instyalling the 1.9 AAZ into my mk2
yeh small bumpers i hate them i bought a set of big bumpers from a local scrapyard a few years ago for my 8v gti but got sick of the low mpg lol so sold it
1.6 GTD engine forsale north yorkshire if anyone is interested
