Title: The end of an era
Post by: Dakotakid on August 05, 2009, 10:01:02 pm
Family farm has been sold.
My last parts car was loaded out today and headed for the crusher.
I sold my last Mk. I car last week.
Somehow, this does not sound like progress.
I got weak in the knees knowing I no longer have my own salvage yard.....and that all the spares I have are in a huge pile....which I now have to pay to store.
Whimper.

I feel your pain. Nothing like having your own parts store in the back yard!!

No...did not give up VW's. Just no longer have parts cars. All my stuff is now Mk. II's.
There are just no Mk. II's available anywhere out here unless I score stuff in Denver (like 9 hassle filled hrs. away).
I recently pressed an '85 Golf with around 500,000 miles on the carcass back into service with a mostly rebuilt engine (used head from ilikevwdiesels...I think that is his handle up there on the east coast.....it is a great head, by the way!!!)

I was going to convert this car to CIS-lambda because my '86 Golf is sort of rusty like the cars I see in the pictures from the great country of Canada (hats off to you, brothers!!). But, I decided to keep it loud, slow, and annoying ::) (I can put a doubled fist through one of the fenders of the gasser. For some reason, woman just ain't interested....ol' well........)

The great thing about a half-a-million-mile car is.......well.....EVERYTHING. We know each other pretty well.
I'm still running that hydraulic oil through these with no ill effects and an increase in heat/power. I recently had the head off one engine I have been running this mixture in (when I opted to use the above mentioned head instead of the newer one already in service) AND, I was surprised to see only the usual thin coating of carbon on the piston crowns....absolutely NOTHING out of the ordinary. Very clean valves and ports as well. Very pleased.

Driving these junkers is.....an addiction.
