ok, so i pulled the turbo and mani off my audi today, and im pretty sure the seals on the turbo are wasted, because when i took the intake and elbows off there was oil in them, and there was oil under the compressor housing on the turbo. but the bearings feel fine. no in and out or side to side play. but, the compressor wheel looks weird to me. im used to the garrett wheels. but the wheel in this kkk, the top of the wheel is really close to the housing like its supposed to be, but then its like the blades were "clipped" or something, for about a quarter inch or so. then it goes back to the right size again after that. is this normal on these turbos? just want to make sure my turbo is ok, cause it still makes pretty good boost.

no, not chipped. the wheel looks fine. every blade is the same. on the outside edge, where it would contact the housing, there is about a quarter inch where they look clipped. like by a machine or something. it isnt a straight smooth edge on the ourside edges of the wheel. i will have to take some pictures tomorrow.

Do they look to be macined into the perimeter of the wheel? If so, it may be where they removed material when it was originally balanced.

yea, it looks machined into the perimeter, right below the top edges of the blades. but its all the way around, and the same. doesnt really look like a balancing effort to me, but each blade may have a tiny bit more material removed.
and another thing. can the oil seals in a turbo be wiped out without the bearings being tits up? because my turbo still spins fine and has pretty much no shaft play, but when i took the intake and pieces off, oil dripped out. thats not supposed to happen. engine used 4 quarts of oil in 400 miles.

The oil in the intake is most likely just from the crank vent.

But yes, the seals can go without the bushings going. How much boost are you running?

i have no idea, its off an audi 5k and it is set to stock boost as far as i know. it would climb up the boost gauge alright, but the wastegate is stuck. and its a *** to get off. any words of wisdom how to get that bugger out?

Stock boost on these engines is 9-10 PSI. If wastegate is stuck, I'd assume you're running more boost than that. Doesn't excessive boost pressure also cause turbo seals to leak?
