Title: 6BT 5.9 L Cummins genset
Post by: TOW'D on July 16, 2009, 11:45:26 pm
Howdy Gang,
A friend just bought a hardly used (18hours)Genset.
It has been sitting quite a while and had some nasty looking fuel at the bleeders
we drained the fuel filters and added ATF
It just will not start and no smoke out the pipe
it has a Lucas CAV distributor type injection pump
we bleed all the air out of the system
there isn't much fuel at the injectors- just a weak dribble
it will run on either
Is there any thing we can do to get the IP to start pumping
any on-line sites we should check out
thanks
hank

My friend got it running by pulling the injectors and freeing them up
he kept feeding it using 3 cans of ether ::)

but now it starts very easy

cheers

3 cans of ether? your friend is an idiot. ether is to AID IN STARTING. not for continuious fuel in a diesel engine. that stuff ignites at like, oh, 45* before TDC. so thats like having super ultra mega advanced timing, and no throttle. i bet it was just singin runnin on pure ether wasnt it?

A buddy of mine destroyed a 6.9 idi by squirting like half a can into the intake and then compression starting it. when the engine finally started, it just started burning out. not like truck sideways with the tires on fire or anything, but i could hear rubber squealing when that thing fired, and it wasnt from him doggin the brakes either. then we got the thing back to the shop to work on it, and instead of fixing it like we were going to, we decided to pull it out, and that was a good idea, cause the head gaskets were blown and heads cracked. it pressurized the cooling system to 16psi in less than 3 minutes. LOL!

I like watching the pullers start their engines cause they use alot of ether!

yea, but they need to, they have absolutely the bare minimum compression required to burn diesel at idle. and dont use any sort of pre heat system either i dont think. but they can run over 150 psi because they have such little compression. we on the other hand, are running 24:1 or so for most of us. and we all have glow plugs.

Yeah i know its just fun to watch 2 cans sprayed straight in to the intake and the driver move the throttle with little response till its warmed up.

My AAZ headed 1.6 acts funny till i got a good bit of heat built in to it. Then it runs like a raped ape! Don't need ether yet though.

my 1.5 is an absolute dog till you get about 140* built up. then once its good and warmed up, it flies. i think im going to dyno my car when i get my license back. i really want to see where im sitting. i know it has power tho, because it has no traction in first gear ever, and it has limited traction in 2nd. you can be rollin along in first gear, punch it, and once the turbo spools, it just breaks the tires loose. and i have really huge tires on that thing right now. they are like 4 inches taller than the 195/60/r14's i used to have on there. they rub so bad, but the wheels are dope. (butt rockin 80's dukes of hazzard wheels)

I agree about using ether -way too much
he said that he figured it would start running on diesel since it ran on ether
