At the 1/4 tank mark when I fill up, I can put in 7 to 7.5 gallon max. Is this normal behavior for my 92 Jetta? How about yours?

On my 81 1.6 N/A (10 gal tank) when I get to the last 1/4 it allows me to add roughly 8 gallons. Not sure if the 92 got a 12.5 gal or not. I am replacing mine with a 25 gal fuel cell :)

My tank is 13.7 gal. Where will your big fuel cell go? Got a link?

13.7 Gallon tank, and at 1.4 you can only put in 7.5? Somethings wrong there... how can that be.. unless of course the last 1/4 of your tank is in fact actually larger than 1/4 of the tanks volume!?!?!?!?!?!?!? LOL. seriously though 1/4th of 13.7 is 3.425 off the top of my head... and adding 7.5 to it os only 10.925 gallons. You missing out on 2.8 Gallons man... or %21 of your tank.... Almost another 1/4! I think your fuel tank is conspiring man...lol :)

8v-of-fury, I know my guage is not accurate, that's why I made the post to find out if they are all like that or not and whether something can be fixed to make it more accurate.

a new sender unit and a new gauge would probably be the only ways to fix a 17 y.o inaccuracy lol sadly.
my gauge in my 84 works flawlessly.. let me tell you theres a bout the width of a dime past the orange before you run out of fuel.. i've had it there so many times :P

The majority of them aren;t quite right it seems.. Generally I've found that one of many quirks of old German cars is DON'T TRUST THE FUEL GAUGE! I think out of 7 Vw's and 2 Mercedes one of them had a decently accurate fuel gauge.
I though my ole Caddy was geating crazy good milage when I first got it.. That is untill I pushed my luck and found out it is empty when the gauge read a quarter of a tank...
A new sender fixed most of them up, but it doesn;t hurt to check all the connections and grounds in the circuit either..

82 Audi 4k 1.6 NA has about a 16 gallon tank. At a quarter tank I fill it with 11-13 gallons.

On my gasser I bent the prong on the sender and it reads a little better. That is only when it runs out though. The rest of the gauge isn't as accurate, but it is very close. Take a can of fuel with you and run the tank out, make a note of how far you can go, and see if it is something that you really want to fix.

The needle moves pretty fast with a full tank untill it drops to the 1/4 mark (300 to 350 miles), then it moves very slow from there. Is it a float on an arm type sender? Any tips I need to know to remove the sender? I am going to try cleaning it and bending it.

Yes it is the float and arm type.. Nothing too out of the ordinary to remove it.. Cleaning it may do wonders.. 17 years of gunk grime and rust take their toll.. Clean carefully though they be fragile.. Hence the replacement sender for my one car... ::)
