i got a gtd with factory intercooler that i'm swapping into my 81 NA caddy. fabbing a 2.5 inch downpipe and exhaust too. having trouble finding much out about the gtd's. cool engine though, it has a pump to water cool the turbo. almost finished with all the mods to put it ( egt, boost, oil temp gauges air ducting etc) starting to get pretty excited. question that i have is what is the timing supposed to be set at with the GTD? I've heard they have different injectors and was wondering if breaking pressure is different

gtd with IC in a caddy is 8)
and yes the GTD engine has an IC, "bigger" (more flow) injectors different pump, water coolled turbo
the injectors are factory set for 155bars
are you installing the IC on top of the engine or in front of the radiator (better option)

i'm installing it top mount. I know the purists are shuddering right now, but It gets hot here in missouri and i'm old and i want an air conditioner. i'm installing a hood scoop to ram air through the intercooler as well as a fan underneath that pulls air through the intercooler any time the ignition is on. thought about a temp sensor at first, then i figured that there is never going to be a time when the fan doesn't need to be on. guess i'll set the time at .95 or so and try that out. i'll get some pics together soon and put them up. I know it's cool to lower a caddy, but i raised mine since i'm not cool. i just like the way it looks better. plus the passat wheels and tires fit now too

probably coil spacers or different coils i would assume, since those are about the quickest, easiest, and cheapest methods.
i want a 4x4 vw pickup.
put sammy running gear under it or something. and build some sort of a tube sub frame?

Why not just buy a Syncro pickup?

because those are basically made out of unobtanium here in the united states. and besides, thats a vanagon, and i hate vanagons.

Well then try to put Golf country syncro running gear into a caddy. That might be a bit easier, but getting a Golf syncro would be harder.

Or find a Passat syncro and get the drive shaft shorten

but all those options you just listed off, all have one major problem. they are all independant suspension. if i were to build a 4x4 VW, it would not be independant. i would put some sort of small straight axles in it. and mount the engine lengthways. if you can put a VW engine in a sammy, why cant you take the running gear out of a sammy and put it in a VW? i think it would be dope as hell seeing a rabbit or caddy pull up on some 31" mudders. if i ever had something like this, i would definitely use the 4 wheel drive too. think of the dopeness, a VW with hubs and a transfer case.

right? cause the golf syncros look pretty ***in, and they still have little street tires on them. some 29 x 9.50 super swampers would be amazing. you would have enough torque and traction to climb a damn tree.

I had that though last year...Except it was Toyota from and R24 motor and 5 speed, with a MK3 Golf Body on it...didn't have room to do the work

as far as where i got the engine, i had it imported from quality german auto parts on the net. I made em do a compression test and tell me the values before i bought it. pretty good folks to deal with. not cheap but everything seemed the up and up. supposedly had 78,000 miles. it looked about right from the condition of the hoses and such. good crate, fast shipping, went out of their way to put up with all my requests.
to answer the front end question, I ordered some type II jetta springs and new strut inserts for a type one and put the springs on. it was a *** to do but once i got ahold of an impact driver it was a breeze. it lifted the front end up about 2.5 inches and the ride is about the same as before. passat wheels and tires fit perfectly. now to zip out the fenders and extend em ;D
