Title: overheating ---> overheated ---> rebore questions

On my 95 AAZ,

I was driving on the highway when my engine overheated rather badly, to the point that it stopped running. When I pulled over, the oil on the outside of the engine was smoking, and the little blue sensor on the driver's side of the head had melted right off. Also, the plastic insulators on the glowplugs had sorta melted. The engine would crank, a bit slowly, and you could smell exhaust in the coolant reservoir...

So after a $270 tow home, I popped the head off (easier said...), and the cylinder linings are rather scuffed on the E/W sides with what looks like aluminum deposits.

Would it be worth having the block rebored, and pistons replaced (and whate else), or should I just start shopping for a new engine?

If I do go for  a rebore, what is involved on my end to prepare for it, and what's it going to cost me, approximately?

I'd get a new engine in your shoes. Maybe look for a 1.6td this time around, you might be happier in the long run.

go for the 1.6 ive seen engines that were melted down as bad as yours, and its best just letting that thing rest in pieces. it *FOR SURE* has a cracked head. and for sure all the pistons are shot, and for sure needs to be bored pretty large. i would have said to rebuild, but if you got it as hot as you say you got it, then its pretty much garbage.

Let me know what turbo it has, if it's a K14 I may be interested if you part it out.
Sorry to hear about your overheat..
I had a crank pully go on me lately, same engine, lots of damage.

Whatever you do, find out why it overheated. Could save you the heartbreak of a second sudden overheated meltdown in your near future.  :(

That sort of heat would probably have thinned the oil to water, so the bottom end might not be too clever either. :(

Yeah I would get a new engine, it sounds like you really got it cooking. The turbo is probably due for a rebuild now, but maybe not.

I have a couple AAZs I'll sell cheap that will need some rebuild work. Crank pulley failures and the likes
