Title: Turbo choices for the 1.6/1.9 hybrid.
Post by: docadillac on June 26, 2009, 02:00:24 pm
After more reading and searching I have found there can be options with regard to turbo choices. These apparently include the VNT17, Garret GT25BB and the KKK K24/26 hybrid. I'm looking for as much boost as can be reasonably used without getting billet connecting rods and custom pistons. The ideal set-up would be one that gives good low end torque and good performance for passing on the highway. I am thinking 20 lbs. of boost would be about the maximum to retain safe operation on stock engine parts or am I out to lunch on this? Thanks.

If you only want 20 psi get a K14 off an AAZ.

The VNT 17 would be a better turbo IMO. You'd have the boost down low in the rpm range like the k14 but it would flow better when passing on the highway. That's if you are willing to rig up a control system.

Thanks for the replies guys. I'll look at control systems for VNT17's and see how they work and what's needed and go from there.

go with the 17 and the cable control system.

i would run the 1.6 turbo, k24 or t3, but that's just me.  k14s are soooo small, i'd rather have more power than a turbo that spools that fast.

If you are only running 20 psi I think you should go with the smallest turbo that can efficiently make that much boost. A VNT would be great with the exception of controlling it.

I think you would get better fuel efficiency with a T3 or K24 though.

yeah i think vnts are awesome, but to me it's just a complication that can easily be gotten rid of by just using a normal turbo.

yea, but think of it this way, once you get the variable vanes set up, its not like having one nice sized turbo. its like having a nice small, quick spooling turbo, but then once the vanes open, its like having a big ass sorta laggy turbo. and then you have the infinite variation on top of that. hell, you dont even really need to run the vanes, i never have, but probably should.
