Title: Mk3 cluster repair? Anyone?
Post by: veedubcanuck on June 11, 2009, 11:25:46 am
I have a cluster here from a 96 Jetta. The speedo doesn't work (it makes a buzzing and wiggles at 0) and the tach wont work either. The other functions work. I put in another cluster to isolate it and it works. Does anyone know how to repair these??

Thanks!

I have the same problem on a mk3 golf, the cluster came from a Seat Ibiza.
I replaced the big capacitor (had 430uF instead of 470uF) for a 1000uF 35V and it worked for a few days, but now it came back :(

Yup... classic failure mode of the A3 cluster... and it *won't* be a loose solder connection etc.  The cluster is failing its self-calibrating mode (that's what the wiggling at zero is).

There seems to be only one guy on the entire interweb who has reverse-engineered the A3 cluster and has the electronic equipment to work with the on-board programming etc.

Head over to the Vortex (I know, I know) and PM "a3clusters".   He has a excellent rep.  Sounds like it's in the order of 100 bucks for the standard repair, and he warranties his work.
