Does anyone out there have, or know where to get, fuel consumption curves of grams/HP-hr, vs RPM for the 1.6? The only thing I have been able to find iis this post, which implies that the most efficient point is at 2,000rpm. I see these all the time for airplane engines, but have actually never seen one for an automobile engine.

Here you go in a PDF file
https://home.comcast.net/~smhitchings/VAG_Manual.pdf
its sort of near the bottom. Has spec fuel consumption for 1.6 idi and turbo as well as the audi 5 cyl turbo :D
the pics might be hard to read... if its that bad I have the original pdf file on hand :)

Thanks. This is great.

Yeah...actually I think their term is more correct....the N/A diesel certainly does suck.

Yeah...exactly!

There is also a plot of bsfc (brake-specific fuel consumption) for the 1.6lTD motor showing bsfc contours plotted against rpm and load in the VW TD SAE paper. There is a crappy scan of it floating around the internet, but the numbers are only barely readable. I do have the original paper.
Here is a thread with bsfc plots for the 4-cylinder TD, the 5-cylinder TD, as well as the TDI (which gets under 200 g/kWh!):
