Title: VNT15 1.6td compressor surge? (video)
Post by: hamradio on June 08, 2009, 07:06:41 pm
So, I know, I know, supposedly compressor surge cannot happen on a diesel.  However, my turbo is making a not so awesome noise.  It is a chirping-barking-ish kind of noise if I rev it up a couple k to build some boost, and then let off, in neutral.  I can also hear it if I'm shifting from 1st to 2nd.

My vanes are shut all the way until 15 psi, when they open.

The video.  Boost gauge is 0-25 psi.  Hopefully the sound can be picked out over the rattling of some trim.

Ugh, I figured it would be like that.  I can hear it through headphones, but I also know what to pick out.

I'll try to get something better tonight.  The engine kinda chirps a bit and you can feel it shake through the steering wheel as it goes back down to idle.

That is your problem. You need to make a system that moves the vanes progressively with the throttle or adjust the screw setting for minimum vane position.
