Title: Engine swap question
Post by: 1340 on June 08, 2009, 01:01:38 pm
I 've got a '93 Passat (beater) I'm doing an engine change on.
What parts should I change while I have the engine and transmission split?
Is this covered in Bentley's?
Where in Alberta would be the best place to get these parts?
A newbie thanks you.

Hi there fellow Albertian.

I get a lot of my parts from a Canadian Worldpac dealer: www.importcarpartscanada.ca

They ship from Ontario, free shipping over $75, and the parts are 90% OEM brands.

You're close to Concept1 in Calgary who are great for aftermarket stuff... gauges, pods, etc.

With the engine and tranny apart I'd consider replacing:

- rear engine seal
- full clutch kit including pressure plate
- tranny input shaft seal
- pushrod seal
- pushrod bushing
- full set of shift linkage bushings
- engine mounts if they look dodgy
- cv joints and/or boots, if they look dodgy

...all stuff that's way easier with the engine and tranny on the shop floor.  Ball joints and tie rod ends are easier with the engine bay clear, and I'd also think about drilling and tapping the exhaust manifold for an EGT gauge  ;)

Thanks for the info, it will really help.
I pass by Edmonton all the time (work in McMurray), any good parts places there?
My Passat has an AAZ (hooped) so I picked up a '93 Jetta to get another AAZ. The Jetta sat for almost 2 years with no back window. Interior has mold, and the body has a bunch of dents.
The Passat AAZ I'll keep for rebuilding.
I really got into VW diesels since buying my 2006 Jetta TDI!

Sweet !!  The last year before cow urine here in the states. (BlueTec) I'd keep that one for decades.
