Title: my '91 N/A Jetta
Post by: rubberducky on September 06, 2005, 04:13:46 pm
Well, i've been pecking away at this car of mine, and came across this today.  the water temp LED (red) is blinking...  i've taken a quick look at the Bentley while at the garage, but couldn't find the info.  can anyone offer me some insight on this?

since my "...need advise" post in the General section, i've re-done the rear brakes (wheel cylinder and new shoes; had the drums turned), new master cylinder, put in new side view mirror with silicone caulking, patched the broken windshield washer hose, re-aimed the washer nozzle (it was shooting the washer fluid above the car), trouble-shot the horn that wasn't working (real embarassing story - since i really doubt i'll ever meet any one of you, i'll tell you...  didn't realize that the horn only worked when the ignition was ON - took everything apart, including the fuse / relay box), replaced various switches and relays...  waiting on a thermo switch for the radiator so the fan will kick on - hopefully it'll be here tomorrow.

its been slow, but seeing that diesel's the cheapest thing at the pump here, i think it'll be well worth the money i've put into it so far.

anyhow, many thanks in advance.

Namasté.

I had the same thing with an 85 Golf.  Check the level sensor in the reservoir tank.  The plug had gotten loose on mine and it took me a year to figure out the source.  Amazingly I was able to blank out the blinking red LED after a while.  Does your guage climb to the hot side even when the car is cold?

Thanks for the quick reply kyntex.  i just flushed the coolant system, so it's probably 'settled' and i need to replenish some fluids...  i was thinking that, but it was getting late, and i was getting hungry, so i didn't bother.  i was getting fed up with crawling around underneath the vehicle trying to get them danged exhaust retaining rings...

in terms of the guage, i find that it barely moves...  i was working on it with a buddy the other day, and he saw it climb, but i missed it.  where would that sensor be (i'm too lazy to look it up right now).  i'm thinking about putting in an aftermarket temp sensor, along with oil pressure guage etc (but seeing how lazy i really am, i probably won't.  instead i'll wait til i get a turbo'ed motor first, if i get around to it)

on a related note, i'm getting a lower temp setting thermo switch, since i figured its a non-turbo, so i'll probably a bit heavy on the right foot, since it won't be as responsive as i'd like to be...  we'll see how that works.

Cheers.
