Title: Blown Wheel Bearing?
Post by: 8v-of-fury on May 28, 2009, 05:34:18 pm
Well... Today it was raining hard so naturally i was playing around.. driving through realllllly big puddles, taking corners far to fast blah blah blah.

As I was rounding the corner in to Canadian Tire's parking lot.. at a moderate speed, i let off the gas and put in the clutch to coast in it started to shake the car and a knocking was coming from the front left. As soon as I touched the breaks the knocking and vibrating went away... ALSO when accelerating there was no evidence of this either.. while shifting the car would shake and rumble and knock but as soon as I had it in gear and on the gas it went away.... Weird

Now a little while ago I noticed that the front left had some play in it.. left to right about 1/8" total play..or 1/16" either way with no steering wheel movement.. I figured the bearing.. but when my last bearing on the other side went.. last year it wiggled in all directions. this one would only wiggle horizontally. NOW it wiggles and clunks in all directions. I thought it was my CV to be honest.. but now im thinking it may be my Bearing. What do you think?

It will be much cheaper if i can take in the steering knuckle and  a bearing rather then my whole car eh? Also.. I will mark my camber this time! as last time i did not! lol I should buy new A-Arms and bushings and axles, and tie rods while im at...  make it steer good for when i go DIESEL!! but i cannot afford it :(

I once had the exact same issue, the big nut on the CV joint was loose in the hub.

would this cause damage to the bearing?  i had a blown bearing on a golf.  it made a rumbling noise whenever weight was put on it, such as turning the opposite way.  renting the tool to change it out might be the easiest way.  i hate messing with alignment.  ;)

*flame suit on*

I'm going to get it for this one... ;D

There was nothing wrong with my car, i went to jack up the drivers front today to take a look at what was wiggling... and when i went to undo the Lugs... they were loose... I did not torque them down when i swapped tires a few days prior. I am An Idiot. lol

Three of the four had backed out a good two threads... man! am i ever glad i had the sense to get home and stop driving it. lol. Makes me feel better, the ol' girl didnt let me down.. it was my bad!

someone went over board on my 97MK3, I can't get the bolts off, I tried a 6foot pipe on a strong arm and spun the tire....with the Ebrake on.

No that sounds about right. I never could hold the axle on mine even if it was in gear and a friend holding the brake. That was with a cheater pipe and me, but with an impact it came off no problem. I may have had luck with a pipe wrench on the axle shaft, but I can't remember if it worked or not. This was all up front of course.

The ebrake isn't going to help you out since it only is for the rear brakes...unless we are talking about something else ???

Once I was trying to get the axle nut off on my Scirocco, I had the e-brake pulled, car in 5th gear, and it was still enough to skid the whole car forward.  I had it calculated as to how much torque it was, a really long pipe on a breaker bar with all of my weight on it- something like 1800 foot-lbs??   :o

Now I have an electric impact and a torch.   ;D

I always break the bolts free on the ground then jack it up. That way I'm not fighting with lugs in the air.
