is there any trans that bolt to the 1.6td , either auto or standard, that would work in a RWD application? I'm just wondering.. my mind is thinking up evil little plans

Nope. FOx is still fwd but the engine is turned the other way.

VW nor Audi ever made a front engine, rear wheel drive product.
True,
Fox and quantum are longitudinal engines,
but still front wheel drive.
I would guess your best bet would be to go Syncro?
(Cause it should just bolt up to the engine)
I dont know enough about the system to know if you can render the front useless.
Also, I once saw a chopper with a bug engine it it.
They bolted the engine in,
put a plate over the side of the trans where one output flange came out,
and drove a chain off the other output flange.
If you welded the diff, they will turn at the same speed...
just something to think about.....
It may be easier to mount the engine in the back....?
You gotta clue us in on the general concept of the project,
what kind of chassis?

Porsche 914 transmission. Engine in front of transmission, RWD, May need an adaptor plate to change from the type 4 aircooled to watercooled, but that's easy to find.

Thats why we need more info on the chassis!
If we use a 914 (or.... Boxster!!!!) box,
he is can only do a mid engine arrangement.
Not so good if he is building a rwd drag car in a
miata chassis!
But, you could use a 944 torque tube.....
you could have the engine up front and the trans in the back
Oh yeah, 944 boxes are robust and cheap and similarly arranged.
I was assuming we needed something to match up to the bellhousing,
otherwise he could just bolt any rwd trans with adapter and rock out!

A Toyota W56 with an adapter plate, either made from the available blueprint, or from Acme Adapters.
These trannies stand up to GM smallblocks just fine and are cheap and easy to find. Toyota flywheel can be modified, or a new one bought from Acme.

to be honest, I was thinking of trying to find a small british sports car, such as a MG Midget and be fun to put one of the 1.6td's in it.. was just thinking.. 8)
(i'm hooked on diesels but want a small sports car, lol)

I actualy have a fairly well preserved and rebuilt 75 Midget and wondered the same thing before but I wouldn't want to hack the car up and I'm pretty sure the VW engine is a good bit taller than the Midget and the hood would have to be modified drasticly if that is of concern. I can tell you though that this 1975 Midget 1600 with it's stock 3.89 rear end gears tachs 4,500 at 65 mph and isn't worth 2 cents on the highway. I wouldn't trade 10 of them for my old Rabbit and I have a pretty nice little Midget. I too am curious though about how it would act and they only weigh in the neighborhood of 1,600 lbs I think. From what I remember the horsepower on the 75's was only rated 48, first year of the emission stuff but that stuff is long gone on mine ;D

RabbitTD, ya i get that they are not great cars, my buddy had one years ago.. he actually still has it in his garage he's been neglecting.. that's why I was thinking about it(lowballing him for it), and since i have two 1.6td's in my driveway no one wants, I'd hate to just scrap em..

3.2 Carerra engine in a 914 is what I'd want. ;)
But anyway, what are the ratios for that Yota box? I'm getting closer to building a Lotus-7 Replica, I'd want it to be VAG powered if at all possible. :)

Coolest thing I ever saw was a Datsun 240Z with a Datsun 6 cyl diesel in it. All stock Datsun parts. Cool but wierd. Cheers Dan

What about using an Audi Quattro transmission and not use the front drive flanges? You could use the driveshaft and independant rear suspension.
I've always wanted to build a rear wheel drive fox this way.

i wonder if you can get the conversion kit for the 1.6 to fit up to a Zuk (tracker) trans and the shove the tracker trans into the VW
