I am going to need a better transmission down the road to fully appreciate the mileage this baby can give me.
Right now the engine is mated to the dreaded AWY! :( Yeah I know.
I was thinking of just keeping the AWY and swapping the 5th gear to maybe a .75 instead of the .89 it has now.
Where do I go about getting one :) there is a goooood selection of MK2's at a local junkyard.. Could I go down there.. find the right trans and steal its gears at a Pick and Pull? what do you guys all think?
Will they even let me do that? lol It sounds like a good plan. What cars came with trans with .75? I think that is my best option for price rather than a different trans. The AWY will be amazing for the 95% of in town driving i do, but the ability to pull low RPM's on the highway when i do use it would be nice too :)
The trans won't be necessary for the initial part of my swap which i hope to do soon, as i will just take it easy and keep it in the lower rpms.
I am so EXCITED!! :P!!!
I CAN'T WAIT TO FILL UP AT TRUCK STOPS!! lol

If you swap a 0.75 fifth into the AWY you'll have an RPM gap of 1381 between 4th and 5th at 100 km/h.
You will also be spinning 2463 at 60 in 4th, or 1635 in fifth.
I had the same transmission and was going to do the same swap but for the speeds that I typically drive the RPMs wouldn't have been very good.
What are your performance plans for the motor?
If the 0.75 swap looks like something you'd want I have a tranny you can have for cheap with one in it.
Check out www.brokevw.com for the 5th gear swap info if you haven't already.

2377 in fourth at 60 kph
1577 in fifth at 60 kph
Thats only a 800 rpm drop.. I can deal with that.. no?
Ahahhh.. but I see the farther up i Shift the bigger the gap.. lol! A shift at 75 kph will yield a 1000 rpm drop
I don't know. I guess it will be ok as I dont need 5th in town.

find an FF code trans. Not really hard to find. They came in the early diesels and gasers as well. Hell I got three in my back yard lol.
They're geared alright, could use a little bit of a taller 5th but im happy with it.

Try to find an ACN, from a base model gasser Jetta or Golf. It's the tallest 020 there is- that's what is going in the Wife's car.

To be honest, it would be much easier to simply get a new lower geared transmission. Swapping in a 5th gear really isn't worth it considering it seems that you guys have tons of diesels in Ontario!
-
take an ACN and put in a 0.71 5th 8)
-
I have an ACN right now. It'd be pretty good on a 1.6

Alright guys, What Cars came with the ACN? and I will start to Sift through the local yards for some good 'ol VW's! There is a lot of gasser ones in a nearby wreckers.. Did they come in gassers?
ASF, AON, ACN, ACL (8v) 3.67 3.45 1.94 1.37 1.03 0.75
Typically found in 85-89 Golf and Jetta according to a WTB thread on the Tex. Gassers???? or Diesels?? or BOTH? lol
I will see what I can Dig up.
Quick question, won't having such a tall trans on an N/a make it a slug? Or will i be able to shift at like 1900rpm :P and cruise around town at like a grand lool I dunno!
I figured a good Close ratio trans would be better for a little n/a in town because then i could whip through gears to keep up with traffic and what not. That's why i wanted to keep the AWY and put in a .75 so that I could still rip around town, and turn nice low numbers on the highway.
And Tyler as for performance, not much.. lol Probably a pump from you guys, and that 1.9 head .. But only after i can drive the stock 1.6 to appreciate the gains i will receive :P

Pretty much answered your own questions. It's a very common transmission, found on pretty much all base model 8v gasser cars from 85-89. I was lucky enough to find one that a guy had just down the road from me in this little cow-town. Your N/A diesel won't be making much less HP than the 8v gassers did at the time, and in fact, you might have more torque so it should be able to pull those long gears pretty easily. It won't be a racecar but swapping your transmission won't really change that. :P

When you say around town, how fast do you typically drive? The AWY wouldn't be too bad, as long as you can avoid downshifting on the highway (which should be possible)
75-85 km/h would be a bad speed though
-
Brendan, your right and I am not looking for a race car by any means. :)
I was just thinking that the 4K i have now with my 1.7 (which is identical to the AWY) is a really good trans for a low hp/tq engine. It still allows me to get up and go pretty well around town which is what i still want to be able to do when I go diesel. Then adding the .75 5th will allow me to turn 2600 @ 100kmh. And even then I can still cruise town at 65kmh at 1700 ultimate town mileage
I mean switching to a ACN or similar trans will only bring my cruising @ 100kmh down to 2400 as opposed to 2600.. Then if i wanted to turn 2400 on the AWY with .75 5th I could drop my speed 3kmh and be the same...
I guess it all boils down to what is easiest... Swap in a new trans :? or just do a 5th swap? I am open to both as I have done neither :) lol
With the AWY i will be turning 3100 to do 100kmh.. UGHH badd lol But i guess it won't be TOO TOO bad for the first while.. seeing as how i dont do much highway.. plus alot of my actual highway trips are on 80kmh roads :) Which turn a much better 2500. I am just puzzled as for what to do. lol
What would you guys do? How easy/hard is it to swap a trans? Same question for a 5th swap??
Tyler what do you mean? 75-85 would be a bad speed though? I don't get it :P Bad speed for down shifting? being that there would be almost a 1000rpm difference? What you talkin dude? lol
-
i'd say that a 5th gear swap is probably going to be easier than swapping a transmission. regardless though, i would definitely want to be turning about 2500 rpm at 100km/h. the engine is producing about all of its torque in that range, and the less rpm's, the less fuel being injected

How much you want to tear apart your AGS and sell me your 5th Jon?

lol i hate bastardizing good transmissions! my old transmission might have a 0.75 5th gear in it! i'd say look for a transmission with a 3.67 final drive, and then swap a 0.75 5th in there. :D

Well with a grinding second.. it would make a good candidate to bastardize  Eh? Let me know when you find out!
Also, how about finding an appropriate trans in a yard at a pick and pull and gutting it for its 5th gear? Easy to do in a yard with hand tools?

maybe with a torch to heat up the 5th gear. if the gear is cold enough, using pullers could actually crack it. i saw 4S on the transmission, and they came with a 0.75 5th gear, but we'll see because i have no idea what the cars been through

Won't work in a MK2. Unless you want to weld aluminum bosses to the side of the trans for the rear mount bracket.
If you've just got an NA, I'd suggest sticking with a diesel geared trans (AOP, AGS, ACH, 4S, 7A,etc). Of those, only the 7A was originally fitted to a MK1, and will bolt right into a MK2. The FF, FO, FN transmission will bolt to the block, but there is that problem with the mount. There MAY be a few F-series transmissions that are late and will bolt in, but I doubt it.
Get a 7A! It's the best for an NA
